In Madonna's peak she managed 10 number 1's. With a total of 24 Top ten hits.
Madonna also managed the worlds top grossing tours (of that time)
During her peak, she also had legions of girls (and boys) wearing bra's on the outside as a fashion statement.
During Madonna's peak she made jean paul gaultier a household name.
During Madonna's peak she created a style that everyone would later use to refrence the 80's. An entire decade is refrenced by Madonna's 80's looks. (The fingerless gloves, tights, headbands and bangles)
There's simply no competition. Can anyone even name one of the girls mentioned that had 10 number 1's and 24 top ten hits during their peak??? anyone?

Madonna>Whitney>Mariah>Celine>>>>>>Britney
Just bc u grew up while Britney was big doesn't make her peak bigger...She ruled only from 1999-2004, don't even try to count 2005-2007 bc is just sad
About the sales:
Mariah Carey 54,240,000
Celine Dion 52,210,000
Madonna (29,300,000)
Britney Spears (32,746,000)

I agree and I understand what you are saying. But Britney holds the record for the highest selling album of all time by a female. (Opps I Did it Again)

Ehmm..I doubt WW and US too
The Beatles’ 1 this week pulls ahead of Backstreet Boys’ Millennium to become the fourth best-selling album since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking U.S. album sales in January 1991. 1 has sold 12,233,000 copies, 1K more than Millennium. The only albums that have sold more copies than these two are Metallica’s Metallica (15,908,000), Shania Twain’s Come On Over (15,531,000) and Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill (14,868,000). 1 is the newest album of these five. It was released in November 2000.

Sorry babe, I was talking about Opps record.
I'm not even a Britney fan so I get crap like this confused. But I voted for her over my fave Madonna because the phenomenon was real.

Madonna
At her peak she got two of best selling albums of alltime, the most iconic tour, multiple #1 hits and media attention, she got them at the SAME TIME

So did Gaga. She had each one of those things during her massive peak.

I think you mean Britney holds the record for the most first week sales of all time. OPPS I did it again holds the record for the most first week sales.
True blue and the immaculate collection are both in madonnas peak and have both sold 30 million plus. (More than OPPS I did it again)
Infact Madonna has two albums in the best selling albums of all time in her peak. 24 top ten hits. 10 number ones.
Sorry, as much as I like Britney. It's not her.

Stop with that "Oops" record already please.
Sales peaked around that time. There was like 3 albums that year with 1+ mil sales. And her label release limited amount of singles to push album sales.
Stop.

- The Monster Ball and BTW Ball have grossed over 400 million combined No one else did it with their first two tours.
- Obviously album sales from the digital era can't compare to album sales before, album sales have reduced to a third compared to when those other ladies were peaking But The Fame and Born This Way are some of the best selling albums of the digital era (The Fame is #2, only behind 21)
- Gaga is a global act, and she has 5 songs make the IFPI year-end top 10 (the most out of any artist) which is far more prestigious than a local #1
- US radio at the time obviously changed partly because of Gaga. And you just need to look at how pop girls dressed during her peak to see her influence
