I agree that Apologize seemed a lot bigger, although I think Counting Stars is a better song.
The thing is, the Hot 100 is a combination of many different demographics. For young people maybe Counting Stars doesn't seem that big anymore, but maybe to a 40 year-old Counting Stars might still seem like one of the biggest songs.
