No, not at all. Both genders can and sometimes should take on both roles, but read my next quote.

Well, in a modern society like the US, Canada, UK etc. Females are afforded the opportunity to work, education, etc. so it is easier for those lines to be blurred and sometimes crossed. But, the whole world isn't. Couples are still marrying in poverty and the easiest and most commonly known way of survival is still for the male to seek work and the female to take care of the responsibilities at home especially if they have newborns that need their mothers for nurturing. The survival of humans has depended on this simple structure for hundreds and thousands of years and as long as there are people born in poverty it will continue to be the most used social convention.
