It's not worse. The reaction of most people back then was that they felt sorry for Mariah. Nobody feels sorry for Britney. She's brought this whole mess on herself.

If you wanna compare Britney's 'flop movie' with Glitter, first you go check Box Office numbers, for example, and then you come back here.

They were both critical flops. Britney's movie did better but was still a joke to the general public. I am under no illusions of the fact that Glitter is one of the worst movies ever made - I fully realize that.

Charmbracelet had MODERATE SUCCESS on radio? Are you HIGH? Well, maybe at your own radio station. Oh, and btw, Mariah singles weren't doing well on radio since 1997. She only recovered with WBT. Britney's singles never were that huge on radio, and after all she never needed airplay to sell albums.

Maybe moderate was going a little far, but it wasn't like it totally didn't get played. It had average rotation, the first single got pretty decent play here in Los Angeles for quite a while.
As far as her other singles.. well from 1997 to the time Emancipation of Mimi came out, Mariah had four #1 singles and another that reached #2.. so I'd say her singles did OK.
You mention Britney never needing strong radio singles.. well she will now. She was carried by showing her body off in music videos, well there's two problems - A.) that body is gone B.) music videos are essentially worthless now. Nobody watches them anymore because MTV and VH1 never show them anymore and she can't depend on that to carry her next album. If she doesn't have strong radio singles she will tank.
