They base predictions off of hits and previous success. Roar is already a pretty big hit, while Applause is underwhelming on the charts domestically and globally at the moment.

I don't think we have anything that would suggest ARTPOP is going to sell any more than 400k. Even that figure seems just a bit generous; not outside the realm of possibility, but still fairly optimistic.

I wouldn't count Katy out. 400k would be a massive increase over the first week sales figures for her last album, but people seem to be responding very positively to, not only the new single, but Katy herself. She could surprise us.
