04.Lupe Fiasco-Food & Liquor
this may seem surprisingly low, but i'll get to that in a bit.
I first heard Lupe back on "Touch The Sky" when Kanye's Late Registration was out. everytime I heard his guest spot I was like "WHO IS THIS??". so I then researched back in September 05 and found out he had his own song out called "Kick, Push". I was instantly blown away by him so I had to tell everyone I knew about this new hip-hop phenom. sending the song to people, bringing him up in conversation, making threads on this very message board, constantly playing his music on my radio show Benjammin, among other things. slowly but surely every month there would be at least one new Lupe convert. I felt like the pastor of the first church of FNF.
then his advance album got leaked. I stayed away from I wanted to hear the actual retail album as it came out, not some early version. then came the delays. from June 27th, August 8th to August 29th. finally, on September 19th it came out, and it was definitely worth the long wait.
the album blew me away just like the first time I heard "Kick, Push". from "The Cool" to "American Terrorist" to "He Say, She Say", every track was amazing to me. well, almost every track. the new version of "Kick, Push II" completely rapes the original version's soul out, and the new version is just a lifeless mess. the lyrical content is still there, just that ****in amateur beat annoys the **** out of me. that, and The Outro. I enjoy Lupe's shoutouts at the end of his songs when they are brief, but 12 MINUTES of shoutouts is just an inexcusable waste of CD. there could of been 3 more songs that didn't make the retail on there!! just pisses me off.
regardless of those two errors, this is easily the debut album of the year. he is currently working on his followup album "The Cool" which will only have FNF in house people (Sound Trakk, and Prolyfic), and Kanye as the producers. also Lupe mentioned to Billboard the crazy idea that he wants to work with Pink Floyd, which if happens will be very special. he also says he only wants to release three albums then stop recording, and just stick to working with his FNF artists. with Food & Liquor, his first part of the Lupe trilogy, it's definitely a great way to start if off. FNF UP!
