the music in 1999 was different. it's like if Lady Gaga went and released The Fame Monster in 1999. Sales wouldn't be how they were. Katy releasing Teenage Dream in 1999. Just because sales used to be higher, doesn't mean anything.
The genre is the most important thing. And bubblegum pop was what was in back in 1999.
Adele's "21" has sold so much because it was fresh breath of air in what the industry is today.
It would have not been the same back in 1999. she would have been going up against a complete different demographic and against complete different artists. and there would have been a chance of failure because she wouldn't have stood out the way she does now. She would have just been compared to Alanis.
