On another note, I think it's unfortunate that Taylor fans around this website have allowed members to bully them into "admitting" that WANEGBT was a sacrifice in songwriting ability for larger appeal.
Or maybe they're just thinking what everyone outside Taylor's fanbase is thinking: namely, that it sounds like something a 14 year old Avril Lavigne would have written.
Look, I understand that you can listen to that song and hear a Joni Mitchell- caliber masterpiece, but I (as well as most of ATRL) just don't. I remember you making a pretty good case for it being 'cleverly written', but one could argue that Stupid Hoe has some cleverly written lines, too.
But maybe I'm just a superficial listener and the intricacies of Taylor's genius writing are going way over my head. All I know is that my emotional reaction to WANEGBT was similar to my reaction to 'Deuces' by Chris Brown; both songs filled me with the overwhelming desire to punch the singer in the face.
Keep in mind that, again, I think that Taylor has plenty of songs that are well written. 'Safe and Sound' damn near moved me to tears. 'Ronan' impressed me too, as it demonstrated what a captivating storyteller Taylor can be when she wants to be.

.
OH! Ouch.
But so true. I'm still convinced it's a leftover Avril Lavigne song.

I disliked the song upon 1st listen but I do get the bullying aspect because me and a couple others keep talking about how much we dislike the song. Of course I know alot of people who are considered genius songwriters who I can't stand so I guess songwriting talent can be very subjective.
Right? The lyrics are funny, sharp and succinct, and full of Taylor-isms like the change from "we called it off again last night" to "you called me up again tonight". Brilliant. And one of the most iirresistible choruses of her career. Pop perfection.
Taylor Swift is not a good writer, she's an amazing one. I think she is intelligent and has a passion for what she does. I don't understand the criticism for We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together because it's a piss-take of the never ending circle of breaking up and making up and when your friends ask you if you will get back together and you say we are never ever....It is a familiar and universal part of many relationships. It is not something only the songwriter can relate to, many people do.
She's not a bad one...just not very versatile or creative, very repetitive
