It's not politically correct but I think Chris's career suffered from it while Rihanna eventually became more successful than ever. She needed to go through the dark & edgy
Rated R era to then be able to sing stuff like "Hard","Rude Boy", "S&M" or "Man Down", acting a mess on Twitter, show some personality (at the time many people were saying she was bland in interviews etc) and more importantly sell SEX (!!!). It was an essential transition to her brand and it showed her team Europe was always here for her seeing as "Russian Roulette" was a success in that market.
