Speculation about Watch the Throne, the hotly anticipated full-length collaboration between Jay-Z and Kanye West, has reached a fever pitch as the holiday weekend approaching, with a combination of non-denials and excitement adding fuel to the rumor that the album will be released on Monday, July 4.
When The Source first reported on June 9 that the album was due out on Independence Day, the announcement seemed no more official than the March 1 date that was allegedly announced by Def Jam after Kanye misspoke on New Year’s Eve and said the album would be out in January (he meant Lex Luger-produced lead single “H.A.M.”). Sure, a purported tracklist had surfaced two days earlier, but there wasn’t anything even supporting the claim until Tuesday, when AllHipHop claimed that a different source had also confirmed the date, adding that the initial release will likely be digital-only, to prevent leaks.
Yesterday, when CyHi Da Prynce appeared on MTV’s RapFix Live, Sway pressed him to speak on the July 4 release date, and while CyHi claimed not to know, his “I can’t say” grin/grimace was confirmation enough for some:
Cyhi, who was in the studio while parts of Watch the Throne were being recorded, also said that “All the music and everything is done,” but that Kanye was perfecting the LP. Young Guru said practically the same thing to Vibe back in March. There’s no indication of pressure from the label to release the album. It stands to reason, then, that only Kanye will determine when the album is done (at which point Jay-Z will have to hear and approve the result). Given Kanye’s history of impulsiveness (and the fact that his own announcement led to the first incorrect release date), we doubt anyone will be able to say for sure when the album will drop until it’s out of Kanye’s hands, which isn’t much advance notice. That said, if the rumors’ sources are anywhere near as reliable as it’s claimed, it’s clear that Kanye, at least, is shooting for a July 4 release date.
Rolling Stone (basically said the same thing)

Jay-Z and Kanye West's collaborative album Watch the Throne may be coming out this weekend. The record, which was originally promised as a January release, is heavily rumored to be coming out on July 4th based on a report published by The Source earlier this month. If this is indeed the case, the rappers clearly intend for the album to be a surprise. According to AllHipHop.com, the initial release of the set is likely to be digital-only in order to avoid leaks.
In an interview on yesterday's episode of MTV's Rap Fix Live, CyHi the Prynce, an artist from West's G.O.O.D. Music roster, revealed that Watch the Throne was "ready to go." "Right now, all the music and everything is done," the rapper said. "But you know my guy — we over here with [Kanye], so 'Ye is gonna add his last little pizzazz, and it's going to be ready for you guys soon."
CyHi declined to provide more details, noting that he is not privy to all of his bosses' plans. "You never know what they gonna do and how they gonna put it out," he said. "They might put it out yesterday."
This july 4th thing might actually be true
