Exactly! It is her darkest album to date. I like to think of Rated R as somewhat of a concept album, which I believe it sort of is - the concept being exploring the darkest depths of a person's soul.

It's unnerving that anyone can say Rated R wasn't dark considering the numerous murder and death metaphors made regarding love. And that's not including the gang metaphor used to describe friendship and loyalty. Call me crazy, but i'm proud to say that where I com from this **** is Dark.

You basically summed it up. Like I said, I wouldn't exactly consider Rated R to be "dark pop", but it was dark in comparison to her previous albums, and everything that was on the radio at the time.
