Britain (and most European countries) were predominantly very white at that time. It wasn't until the 1950s that Britain began to see a lot of immigration. The movie is meant to be fantasy in a real world setting. I think Tim could be called out for a lot of his other movies but in terms of the setting for this one it makes sense that the children at the home would all be white.

I feel like he's been fuming and wanting to say this for a long time (because he's probably fully aware of how white his movies are) so when he finally got the chance to answer, a steaming pile of ******** excuses came out.

I understand Tim Burton is a goth film maker. He has his own aesthetics and they often revolve around the paleness of his characters juxtaposed against the gloominess of his sets, etc. That's his style, okay, no worries. But you can't be a western movie director and not see how problematic it is to say that if you cast a POC in your films they're inherently "tokens". Is that how he sees POC? He can't relate to them on a human level?

Comparing his movies to blaxploitation is so stupid. It's not like white people are in need of their own cinema. They're featured everywhere, even in blaxploitation films

Is it a problem if Tim Burton doesn't cast black or asian actors in his films? Not to me, because I know what a Tim Burton movie is. I know his movies are about white ghostly figures. But these comments are very telling on how he sees the world.

Even though I think he didn't respond the right way to the criticism, I also think people are doing too much on him. It is his art and he shouldn't feel forced to do what other people think he should do just to please them.

His response was also take out of context, by the way. I was indeed interested in watching the movie before all this drama and I will do it if it gets to the theaters here.

Tim Burton isn't racist. He's just a director with a specific vision. Stop trying to make him feel bad for never casting whites. I don't feel like he's going out of his way to not cast blacks, he just lives in his own directorial vision bubble. Who cares?

Focus on films, directors, and studios who legitimately go out of their way to whitewash films, like casting every Egyptian God in "Gods of Egypt" white, or casting Jennifer Lawrence as olive-skinned Katniss Everdean or casting Scarlett Johansson as a Japanese woman, et cetera. Tim Burton is harmless.

I shouldn't even continue with you, but don't you think it's a problem when directors and casting directors consistently say it's just their "vision," which so happens to mean all white? Every time? When it's not even essential to the story?

Even with this story...you could argue PoC in the cast would be "unrealistic." Although there are no PoC in the original book, obviously Burton didn't care about the original book because he changed a substantial amount of the story. So don't come for me telling me it's because of the book.

But please, tell me how a black orphan is less realistic than a little girl with teeth on the back of her head or a lady turning into a bird or evil skeletons.
