If you don't have access to proper healthcare then HIV can be very deadly. Someone close to me was having issues with getting his medication as his insurance kept messing up, thankfully the good people at the pharmacy and the hospital were kind and helpful and he didn't have to miss a day.
However those consistent with their medication and those who still practice safe sex have an easier time with their diagnosis. The side effects can be bothersome for some, but it depends on the person and the medication they take.
In my experience the stigma is scarier than the actual illness, which doesn't kill people actually. I'm not saying HIV is a walk in the park and no big deal, but it's the fear of the unknown that makes it worse than what it really is. As someone else said, we've progressed to the point where HIV is more manageable than diabetes.
Years ago I would have said I wouldn't even touch someone with HIV, but I've since grown up. The fear associated with it is preventing people from getting tested and having an open and honest dialogue which discourages getting educated on what the virus actually is.
