Sorry, but One Direction are just not that good. At least not as good as NSYNC.
There is one exception: If one of you is gay you might have a shot. Wait till One Direction has been dead for two years, kiss your hot boyfriend at an awards show, then ride that relevance like a beautiful boner and pray to god you get a show on Bravo.
None of them are going to be huge solo, so he did lie. Unlike N sync, they are actually global, so when they do decide to get back together in 5 - 10 years for a reunion, they will do well again. Touring money is too big for them not to.
