No, it wouldn't have. It's sales would have remained the same (or similar). Her airplay and streaming may have been different because she wouldn't have gone head to head with Katy (and lost), but the sales would be similar. Nothing was stopping people from buying Gaga's single. Even then she released the video a week later so that should have in theory helped a bit with her lower streaming points and made up for the immediate release plan they had.

Applause is in a good position to be bigger. HIAM was big for one week and was totally forgotten after that.

I don't think Applause is the complete failure that some are making it out to be; it's a respectable, decent success.
I'll wait a while before really labeling it anything, though.

However, I do think that it's an underperformance for someone of Gaga's calibre, as many are saying - which says a lot in itself.
Gaga is put on a pedestal, on which her pop star peers are not.

Do you even know what promotion means? Not only TV aired performances are promotion. Educate yourself, please. They have put the song in GP faces using any media (TV, radio, internet, newspapers, magazines, etc) and the response hasn't been the expected. I don't get why you all act like she hasn't done any promotion.

Gaga already performed the song on a major TV aired show, she already released the video, she already had a radio deal, etc. Rihanna only released the song to radios and iTunes. Yes, of course they did. Some members on here simply can't see past their blind hatred, and will try to do or say anything to tear her down. It's quite saddening that they don't have better things to do with their lives. But Gaga will stay winning, as Applause will jump into the top 5 on the Hot 100 this week, and it is doing wonderfully on iTunes, streaming, and radio right now.

It's very unlikely that Applause will hit #1 on the Hot 100, but Applause may be able to outsell HIAM if it has longevity.

Honestly, no one remembers what song reached number 1, and i'd still be saying that if Applause was number 1 right now. Bad Romance, undeniably one of the biggest pop songs in recent years, and one of Gaga's best known songs reached number 2, does that make it a flop?
I don't get it, I mean Britney's singles, even in her prime, didn't all reach the top ten, let alone number one, yet she was the biggest star around.

No. ATRL rushed to celebrate it prematurely. Her silly ass fans swore that she was going to come in and own the planet, and recapture her The Fame era popularity...but it hasn't happened. I think I even recall some posters asking if Gaga would "save" pop music, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean. Maybe next time certain people will not try to play clairvoyant.

Take a look back people, just look at Britney's single success with her third album, or Madonna's single success with Erotica or Bedtime Stories... We CANNOT expect Gaga to set the charts ablaze every single time she releases something... doesn't mean it's the end of the world.

If we were pulling Lotus like numbers I'd be more empathetic but a song that came out with a rushed release yet still managed to hit number one on WW iTunes in a matter of hours was a huge accomplishment.

The BTW era tainted Gaga's image and ARTPOP's campaign will be all out damage control, she'll have to salvage and rebuild her public persona from scratch. This isn't 2011 anymore... Gaga isn't the hottest thing in pop culture right now.

And there are people here that loath the woman, like obsessively. So of course their going to come in here and say how much of flop applause is... lol.
