Okay, back on Adele, Joanne, and Taylor. They are still on the same level in my eyes. As I said it before, we can agree to disagree on that. Sorry dude.
O/T, but Joy Division's Closer was considered as one of the darkest (and deepest) album ever made.

Absolutely not, Long Live was written for fans but the underlying message IS love: 'I had the time of my life fighting dragons with you'
|
I'm talking about '' romance '' love . if anything that had to do with '' love '' is called a love song then every single song is a love song . whether it talks about loving yourself , your life , your friends .. etc .
Quote:
No, they're not. It's easily the WORST song on SN, lyrically. Smart lines don't mean much if the overall message is about 'interrupting a wedding'. Too...fantasy-land.
|
Yes , they are .
And that's the message you understood from the song ?
The message of the song is '' If you truly love someone , you have to fight for them until the very last day ''
Quote:
I didn't criticize Sparks Fly........
|
Yes , but you said it as '' she wrote it when she was sixteen , it's cheesy but she's got an excuse '' .
Quote:
I like the song, just not the way people overrated it because it was the worst single of the SN era.
|
That's another thing and it has nothing to do with the lyrics of the song .
Quote:
Too young? No, I don't see how a song that is written for GIRLS is gonna influence me....there is only ONE good line in that entire song and it's 'I just realized everything I have is someday gonna be gone.' and even that seems borderline naive - like she's discovering, at 18-19, that things don't last forever.
|
It's not written for GIRLS only , the message is quite clear .
Quote:
If you want a truly well-written, unisex (not just for girls) song about the nostalgia of past times and how time flies, I highly recommend Kenny's 'Don't Blink': Best start putting first things first, 'cos when your hourglass runs out of sand, can't flip it over, start again. Take every breath God gives you for what it's worth.
|
Thanks for the suggestion .
Quote:
Well, many people laughed at her attempt of an 'apology' at the VMAs - I actually thought that song was mature and witty and I still do. I'm just saying Kanye didn't deserve it.
|
K if that's your opinion . it's still a good song .
Quote:
Yes it does, clearly. 'I had the time of my live fighting dragons with you' lol that's like 14 year old writing about rainbows and smiles and happiness.
|
As I said , it doesn't make the whole song cheesy .
Quote:
I didn't say she was obliged to, she can write anything she wants - but don't expect her to ride that wave of success forever because when things are overused they tend to become boring. If in 10 years she's still writing love songs like now...I don't see how that's revolutionary. She's 6 years into her career and some of the songs on Speak Now still evoke that cheesiness from when she was 16 (at the time, however, it was perfectly acceptable, now it's just overused).
|
Legends have succeeded in doing it for years , I don't think it'll stop on Taylor . it's not about the subject to people who care about music , it's about being honest in your lyrics .
Quote:
This is my favorite quote ever. All the artists? Gimme a break Just as an example, Avril Lavigne wrote or co-write ALL her songs on ALL her albums, they are not ONLY about love (you need to go listen to Under My Skin). She got appraise because she was truly innovative at the time and her album content changed every time she released a new one (Let Go was her debut, very sk8ter girl-ish, punk, etc...then UMS came - depressing, teenage angst, then TBDT shook it all up - bratty, schoolgirl, immature (she was tbh, but it worked) - and then GL (a more mature hybrid).
|
Please lets not talk about Avril's lyrics .
'' Hey hey you you I don't like your girlfriend // Noway Noway I think you need a new one ''
'' All my life I've been good but now I'm thinking what the hell // All I want is to mess around and I don't really care about ''
Yes , turned into a very mature artist .
Quote:
Also, Gaga's BTW had songs about EVERYTHING, with tons of different music styles. Most of the songs weren't about love, they were about being yourself. Even TEoGlory, which in a way related to Avril's 'Slipped Away' (both artists wrote their songs about their grandfather who passed away) is deeper than any subject matter Taylor has written about in a released album.
With Taylor, ALL her 3 albums are just love, love, love, love from start to finish with some exceptions like Breathe, Mean, The Best Day, etc. but very scarcely.
I want her to innovate, risk things, show a different side - not reuse the love potion.
|
Deeper than any subject? OK if that's what you think , your opinion .
But no even their songs that talk about their Grandpa's are about love , in your own point of view .
And again , Taylor writes about her life , when something new happens , she WILL write about it .
Gaga obviously experienced more than Taylor , with her being older . and even without the age matter , they're two different people with different lives and different opinions .
Taylor covered a LOT of subjects with her songs . '' Love , heartbreak , self esteem , having trust that working hard will pay off one day , your life with the people who changed your life , growing up and realizing it's going all gonna go one day ...... etc '' .

I do not appreciate the tone of sarcasm you have consistently used throughout your posts when talking about Avril when you clearly do not know even 5% of her discography. It comes across as pure ignorance and I can only help but laugh at those petty comments.
You are citing her most commercial songs - but the fact of the matter is, Avril is versatile in her music. She is definitely one of the best songwriters out there, just because she also writes happy, immature, feel-good pop songs doesn't mean she isn't iconic while doing so. Girlfriend was #1 on the Hot 100 in 2007, and Taylor Swift has never had a #1 H100 song...you may say that is not relevant to this conversation - but it is, because you're basically suggesting that maturity is the key to success. Girlfriend and Complicated are two of the most iconic songs of the 00s, and neither have very deep lyrics.
I respect your opinions when it comes to Taylor - you want her to continue on track with her subject material, while I want something new, but I don't think you should be vocalizing your thoughts about Avril Lavigne unless you have listened to most of her songs. You may or may not like her (I'm not saying you HAVE to like her, everyone has different tastes), but please do not be delusional to the point where you literally state she's immature as an artist with the two of the most commercial songs ever.

"Both Of Us" is hardly smashing in the UK - it's around No 20 in the chart, and I hasten to add, a very poor song - the collaboration between Taylor and B.O.B is not cohesive at all, it sounds like two different songs put next to each other.
Having said that, to the person you were quoting: I know Taylor is never heard about in the UK, in fact I didn't know any of her songs, but I think it is worth trying her music out and buying her album, you may be pleasantly surprised.

"I'm With You", "My Happy Ending", "Nobody's Home", "Breakaway" (which she wrote but discarded, then became a hit for Kelly Clarkson) - I don't think anyone can realistically claim that Avril lacks depth and versatility in her writing/performing. And those are just the singles.
From the little I know of Taylor, it seems like she is similar to being a country version of Avril, but with a bit more of a goody-two-shoes image. Therefore explaining maybe why people may find her lyrics more immature?
