The performance was good, but it is probably the first award show performance where the dancers, production, and the guest artist outperformed Beyonce. She was holding back vocally. I was expecting her to take it to church and catch the spirit Fantasia style, but the passion just is not there. . Kendrick brings the passion and intensity to the song.

" they were a little... flat" - I have a great ear and WONDERFUL sense of pitch..I watch the performance a couple of times after reading your comment..all of her notes were in a comfortable, easy spot, right in the middle of her current tessitura. The notes were all HIT in the center of the pitch 98% ..2 percent being marked off due to times she SLIGHTLY dropped support (trying to phrase and incorporate the intense choreo at the same time). Her intonation was really solid here..heard no "flat" notes..a few were unsupported and slightly underpitched, but not FLAT

"but I would've liked a little more "roundness" in her voice" - How the heck would a rounded placement fit this song's, energy, fiery, and raw production. Her growls were powerful, resonant, in KEY and brought the needed "punch" and delivered the message perfectly.. GREAT display of musicianship.
..also, listen to the instrumentation; the metallic ping of the electric guitars, the booming industrial percussion.. Her growls brought this brassy texture that blended perfectly with the music..

It was good, not great. Yes, her vocals were not as powerful and strong. She had better performances.
The bar is set so high for bey though.
I feel this type of songs does not fit her voice anymore. That gospel song she did on grammys - same stuff, she does not have that voice to deliver those types of songs. She has such a versatile voice like no one else but this is not where she is at her best.
