Every Mary J. Blige album is an essential female R&B album but if you're looking for specific albums, I'd recommend you listen to My Life, No More Drama and The Breakthrough. These 3 albums are Mary's most iconic & classic albums.

What era are we talking? I'll just assume we're mainly talking about the '90's and early 00's cause that was like the golden era. The classics, imo, are

Secrets by Toni Braxton (and her debut, to a certain extent)

These are the first that sprang to mind, at least.

EDIT : For a more neo-soul type of vibe, India.Arie's debut is also a must.

Glad to say I have 80% of these albums in my iTunes.
I've been meaning to listen to Toni & En Vogue for a while and i'm not too familiar with some of the albums on that list so i'll have to listen to those again now.

Also, this is just one of the best R&B albums of the last decade that I've listened to:
