Mike's MLB Breakdown:New York & Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES DODGERS
Case:Well, what do you think? They limped into the playoffs
This team has won 6 World Series titles, but haven't won the darn thing in 19 years. Let's look at what they got.

A good amount of foreign-born players make this lineup for the Dodgers as they seek the NL Divisional title again. Like the Padres, the Dodgers could have some fierce competition.
2006 RECORD:88-74 (NL Wildcard)
2007 ROSTER GRADE:C+ - Not one standout player with maybe the exception of Jeff Kent. I don't like their chances.
PREDICTION:80-82 (3rd in NL West) - The West will be won by.......THE GIANTS! I really think with Zito on the roster, the Giants will dismantle the Dodgers and stop their hopes of a playoff run.
FANTASY PLAYER:Jeff Kent - I'm a little bit biased on former SF players so I think Kent could carry this team if he doesn't get hurt.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
And now, the team everyone knows.
NEW YORK YANKEES
Case:AL East Champions
With 26 World Series titles, you'd think you would be satisfied....not George Steinbrenner and Joe Torre. They want more! You probably know the roster very well but here it is anyway.

I've written off on the Yankees so many times....maybe this year is their year. They haven't won since 2000 and Jeter is getting a bit frustrated. You know he wants to win a 27th title for New York so badly. They have the Red Sox to deal with, the upcoming Devil Rays, Orioles and Blue Jays right on their heels too. Don't think it's a gimme.
2006 RECORD:97-65 (AL East champions, MLB's best record with the Mets tied)
2007 ROSTER GRADE:A - I actually like this lineup. Many familiar names, a well-respected coach, possibly the most famous owner in all of sports, I really like their chances.
PREDICTION:94-68 (2nd in AL East) - They WILL win 90+ games again, but I really think this is the year they surrender the AL East crown to the Red Sox. You know Boston will be gunning for the division title after finishing 10 games behind the Yankees last year.
FANTASY PLAYER:Alex Rodriguez - This is tough, but I choose A-Rod for one reason. EXPECTATIONS! If he doesn't produce in the playoffs, he will be traded. Don't think that he will not back down because you know he is doing the best he can to help his team.
Tomorrow, we're doing the Phillies and Angels, including Tina's other boy Ryan Howard and his case on why the Phillies can win the NL East. On the Angels, will the Gary Matthews Jr. situation be too much to handle?

Opening Day draws near, let's move on.
PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
Case:Team houses NL MVP
Historically one of the biggest laughing stocks in the MLB. They've been around since 1883, and yet they've only won 1 World Series title in 1980.

The Phillies are so used to losing, they might be like the Tigers last year.
2006 RECORD:85-76 (2nd in NL east)
2007 ROSTER GRADE:B- (I'm not liking their roster too much, but it could be tough to beat)
PREDICTION:84-78 (2nd in NL East) - I said the Phillies would make a run, but I think the Marlins or Braves will respond and surpass the Mets.
FANTASY PICK:Ryan Howard - Um, hello? He's the freakin NL MVP!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mike's MLB Breakdown:Day 6
Those who missed the playoffs are trying to make a statement. See Toronto and Houston.
HOUSTON ASTROS
Case:2005 NL Champs
The Astros have won 4 division titles since 1997, not a bad run for them. Their division is tough to get past.
Updated on March 15, 2007

I seriously think they'll contend....but it all could depend on the Roger Clemens situation still boiling over.
2006 RECORD:82-80 (2nd in NL Central)
2007 ROSTER GRADE:B - This is a team that could and should be poised to make a deep run in the playoffs. Phil Garner who took the Astros to the World Series in 2005 will try to get them to the next level, but in their division they got 5 opponents to beat.
PREDICTION:83-79 (3rd in NL Central) - The Astros are gonna do slightly better, but I think the NL Central is gonna be dominated by the Cardinals.
FANTASY PLAYER:Roy Oswalt - I can't find a real big weakness in this team so I picked veteran Roy Oswalt as my fantasy pick.
-------------------------------------------------
TORONTO BLUE JAYS
Case:Team on the rise?
They've only been around for 30 years? Well, entering their 31st season the Blue Jays are trying to make it as World Series champions for the 3rd time. (they were the last team to win back-to-back WS titles before the Yankees) This team can be tough to beat.

This is the 7th time since 1996 they won 80 games in a year, but have not done any damage in the playoffs since their 1993 World Series win. Maybe this is their time?
2006 RECORD:87-75 (2nd in AL East)
2007 ROSTER GRADE:B+ - With Frank Thomas on this roster, I'm giving them a B+. They are in one of the most dangerous divisions with the Yankees and Red Sox in it. 3rd place may be the best they can do until like 2010 with the NYY/BOS rivalry reaching new heights.
PREDICTION:81-81 (3rd in AL East) - Again, with the rivalry between the Yankees and the Red Sox, someone's gotta be the victim. If they weren't in the AL East, I promise you, they would have a much better record.
FANTASY PLAYER:Troy Glaus - The obvious choice is Frank Thomas, but i'm gonna go with a player just as good. Enter Troy Glaus. He helped get the Blue Jays to 87 wins last year and maybe he'll help the team get the playoff spot.
Tomorrow, we talk about the Reds and the 2005 World Series champions White Sox.

Your predictions suck. You pick all the good teams to suck and all the bad teams to do good. Cardinals winning 95 games??? HA, not with that rotation which is worse than the Mets, and you think the Marlins are better even though they've lost Joe Borowski and Josh Johnson... And BTW, it'll be a cold day in hell before the AARP Giants finish ahead of the Dodgers or Padres....
