Primarily he is praised or his choreography. The fluidity of his movement and how different it was to everyone else in the pop spectrum. He is a massive reason why it's default now to have big dance routines within a pop performance. Not to mention that he has a handful of genuinely iconic dance moves that will forever be associated with him. Nobody else has that.
In addition, it's his showmanship that really put him on another level. He knew how to formulate 'moments' on stage that really got the crowd going, often with simply a dramatic pause.
That all may seem very 'obvious' to us now, but that's because the artists of today learnt from him.
Beyonce is a very skilled performer, flawless in fact, but she's not that kind of artist. Not saying she needs to be either, but that's what the thread is about.
