What are you talking about?
People tend to ignore the historical context of everything when they argue that women should not take offense to anything. When the
Cult of Domesticity,
foot binding, and the recent case
of a braindead woman almost being put on life support to deliver her baby, women have always been relegated to a subservient role in society. They were seen as nothing but
objects for sex with no ownership. They were always bound to their husbands in marriage. They could not pursue any career besides something that furthered their family. They couldn't think about themselves.
The Awakening, in particular, challenges these notions that a woman has to give up all of her individuality to conform to her societal role as the housekeeper. But, enough digressions about history and the amount of oppression women have undergone and
continue to undergo. That much is already established.
Let's move on to why Beyoncé's performance last night was
powerful. Let's think for a moment. Are there any successful career women (sans Whitney, but that's entirely different considering she has never shown as much skin as Beyoncé did last night, but more on that later) that exist in the music industry after having a child? Britney Spears reached her peak. Christina Aguilera reached her peak. Tina Turner, Jennifer Lopez, the list goes on. Beyoncé showed it
all off last night through flaunting her innate sensuality. She is going against the societal bindings. She is making a statement.
Women with children can own their sexuality too! Women are expected to mold themselves in ideal housewife persona, they are expected to become prudent, selfless beings that put everyone over themselves. Beyoncé went against all of the prejudices and expectations last night. And that is why she is powerful. And that is why she remains relevant. She is showing the world just how far we've come, and how much more we have to go until full on gender equality is here.
That is what most of you fail to grasp. This notion that women are capable of showing their sexuality as a mother is a
new concept. Why would anyone go against that? Is this not what we not strive for, equality?
