The reigning queen of 2013 makes her appearance on this year's countdown. Sorry Charli, no repeat for you. But this is the song that made my baby girl a STAR! No longer a hook girl, Charli XCX became a true radio pop star in 2014 with "Boom Clap". You guys, this hit #1 on Top 40 radio. That is such a huge deal. She is just so good at earworms; it's a bit concerning that she can write hooks so good like this. This was meant to be some throwaway on a soundtrack, but the power of the song was too big to be denied. And for the life of me, I cannot help but think of the Backstreet Boys every time I hear this song. Can somebody please help me understand where I'm sensing the BSB influences? Thank you, much appreciated!
I need to give some of these songs a listen, haven't heard yet, but yasss Boom Clap. I love how Charli finally managed to get a solo hit, the song was just so great, she is so different but that's what makes her special, her voice is fab, and those lyrics everything she does is so, I don't even know it cathes your ear, and you want to listen again and again.
I still can't at Hilary's team, they turned this down but took Chasing The Sun, sucks to be them.

Tune-Yards is one of the most exciting and creative artists in music today. Her live performance of this song in the video I posted simply gives me chills every time. One good thing about dating your bassist is that he will put his best effort into his work with you. Damn, the bass is just so killer. The first time I heard this song, I was hesitant. But that was only because I found the sound to be so new and different to my ears. The hooks are hypnotic and dizzying to a degree. She wrote this song about writer's block, or the musical equivalent or whatever, but I relate this song back to cabin fever, of which I am a frequent victim. She captures that feeling of uneasiness and discontent when you feel you aren't doing anything with your life.

Speaking of hypnotizing, this song takes psychedelic rock into a new age. When I first saw Perfume Genius (judging book by cover), I thought he made wimpy piano ballads or something. Totally wrong. Let's just state the obvious: he's a baby Freddie Mercury, without the huge voice. With his eccentricity & proud femininity, he gives the song title a double meaning. "Don't you know you're (sorta the weird, modern-day) Queen?" This song has so many different segments which really make it fun to listen to. Of course, my favorite part is the trippy guitar solo which is just so fun and mesmerizing. Keep doing ya thing, queen!

Finally, Taylor Swift takes aim at all the critics who called her ho who ****s for songwriting inspiration. And of course, her aim is perfect. She really knows how to write responses to certain life situations. Honestly, going to pop has been one of the best career decisions Taylor has made. The sound and freedom of pop allow her to inject an extra burst of personality into her vocal delivery. The sarcasm, the anger, the playfulness; it's all there in the song. Her shoutout to Starbucks lovers is one of the wittiest non-sense lyrics since the entirety of Born This Way. Brava, girl! Pop welcomes you with open arms!

From one woman who is known for her relationships, to another who is becoming more known because of a relationship. Man, this song really leaves an impression, doesn't it? After four listens, I was convinced it was going to be my #1 song of this year. Obviously, afte a few months, the spell has sorta lost its magic, but I still love the song. In 2013, I thought fka twigs had promise, but she needed to put more focus on songs that left a bigger impression melodically. "Two Weeks" has such a soaring back-end of a chorus that you certainly don't have a hard time remembering it. I love how, looking back, you could totally make this out to be twigs's challenge to RPat to forget KStew, but I'll leave that analysis up to the gossip mags!

There are few things I love more than a sassy Miranda Lambert. Gah, she has so much swag on this record, the title track to her fifth album. Miranda has shown a lot of admiration for TSwift, even after her transition to pop, and it shows in this song. In the background you can hear a few girlfriends chatting, and I feel like that is such a "pop" thing to do. Small, subtle influences. This is really a song about Miranda's bravado. Country boys sing about their big trucks; Miranda's singing about her big heels and bleach blonde hair. A country girl swagger singalong is just what the world needs.
