Some of you need to be put in your place.
There are “legends” and “pop icons”.
Britney Spears is a pop icon. She has her classic songs... BOMT, Toxic, Oops, Womanizer etc. They sold “whatever total Alexz makes up”. However, when you look at her albums, no one is here for them. I have known Britney for 10 years and the only album I can recount from my head is Blackout. The rest I had to Wikipedia. She is in the same boat as your Rihanna’s, Katy’s, Ke$ha’s etc. You can name all their greatest hits, but you will be hard pressed to actually remember their album names. #NoShade.
Alicia Keys IS a legend. The impact she made in her 2001 debut, in an era of Pop culture and early modern rock, is tantamount. She has her classic hits, Fallin’, No One, If I Ain’t Got You, You Don’t Know My Name, Sleeping with a Broken Heart etc. But she has 4 memorable, genre-defining albums. What straight up Rookie jumps into a Pop cluttered field, releases an RnB/Urban album and receives 5 Grammys from that same album. Then follows it up with 3 solid, creative albums.
I don’t regard Beyoncé and Christina as legends since they truly don’t have a certain niche to them. They are talented, hard-working and have made a huge impact. But they change from different genres too loosely to have a defined “caricature”. Beyoncé went from Rnb to Pop, Pop, to Rnb. Christina’s album have been all over the place. Solid, but no real direction. Alicia has been in the game a decade, and stayed pure to herself, her roots and evolved with each album.
Can we say the same for the others?
