How does calling Beyoncé's album release tactic a "trick" imply malicious intent? It was a method that a mainstream artist has never
used before (with a major release, at least) that helped the album garner immediate attention. It was, by definition, a trick.
Wait, what did I miss? Did Gaga say something shady about Bey?
Yes, she said Beyoncé's album release strategy (along with Jay's and U2's) was a "trick to get the world to focus on the album for a brief moment". Because apparently she believes the old fashioned way is the only way. Good for her, don't see how no promo/minimal promo equals to "gimmick". I'd say it's the opposite.
AP: U2 released its new album alongside Apple, and Jay Z and Beyonce also released recent albums in unconventional ways. What do you think about that and do you think of innovative ways to release music when readying a project?
Gaga: I think honestly what we need to be doing, and this is my opinion, is instead of trying to find ways to trick the world into focusing on the album for a brief moment, I think that artists need to speak more about how media treats the artists and making the distinction between the celebrity and the artist, because everything is all in one pool now isn't it? We're all the same and they're some pretty terrible celebrities out there, let's be honest, right? People famous for no reason. So, I think the more the media can help us to support the artist and support music in a way that's maybe less critical for journalists that are not as knowledgeable about music and help to just spread the music and see the music as gift to the world.
Yes, he did and the first thing she said was that they used "tricks" to get people interested. How is that "defending" anyone?
I can't even call it shade, because she just sounds bitter.
I see what you're saying, but would this be interpreted as shade if she had said "marketing tool" instead of "trick"? Poor wording, that's why I said **** got out of hand.
I've posted a couple times about this so I'll just copy/paste.

What Gag said was hypocritical and ironic coming from her, but I don't think it was malicious or she was being intentionally shady. She didn't use Bey as an example and wouldn't have come out her mouth that way either. The interviewer pretty much set the stage. Hook. Line. And sinker.
I took it as her saying it's a shame that in order to get the public/media to pay attention (positively) to an artist's new project, the artist has to do something very unconventional and surprising. She wants word of mouth by other celebs and media to be the reason an album sparks the interest of the public. The Adele effect, essentially.
And she's also a visual artist. I'm sure she's mad she didn't think of the videos ideas first.
This makes no sense Bey and Gaga have their own respective styles when it comes to videos (and music, and everything else).
This thread is giving me life
That wasn't even a shade tho
Tricking is not necessarily a negative word. I saw Gaga PRAISING her for ha (Bey's) professional and artistic skills and not shading her. You guys are overreacting.
And then her fans want to act all surprised and confused with their Hive comments as if they were dragging everything and everyone in sight in 2010-2012.
It's so unsettling.
They seem to have forgotten all their ******** during the 4 era.
