The Martian is not close to being avant garde. Mad Max is though. You can't deny the universal acclaim and the fact that it's sitting in many critics' top 10 lists, more than The Martian has. A few things that The Martian has over Mad max is Matt Damon's star power, and the huge box office draw. The Martian is also more traditional than Mad Max, which may be more palatable than Mad Max over all for traditional voters. Have you seen Mad Max though? I was just wondering why you didn't think it as avant garde enough: the amount of stunt work performed, the minimalistic plot that arches over heavy themes (environmental destruction, religious fanatacism, feminism, etc.), the cinematography, and the "stare" acting of Charlize and Tom Hardy.
