The Boy Next Door (R)
Thriller - Jan 23, 2015
Opening Weekend: $14,000,000 [proj.]
Total Domestic Gross: $37,000,000 [pred.]
http://pro.boxoffice.com/statistics/...next-door-2015
Really good for J.Lo and its low budget movie
hopefully they're right and it can end at 40-45 total gross.

American Sniper's estimate is about $60 mil. Should be the 2nd-best January weekend ever, behind Avatar's $68 mil.
Probably the 5th-best R-rated weekend after Matrix 2, Hangover 2, Passion of the Christ, and 300.

Friday AM Update: American Sniper earned a massive $5.3 million from Thursday night shows beginning at 7 p.m. That's over three times as much as Lone Survivor and Taken 3 made during their late Thursday shows ($1.5 million each).
That number may be inflated a bit by the fact that Sniper scored six Oscar nominations—including Best Picture—earlier in the day. Still, it's a clear sign that there's huge demand for this movie right now; it would be shocking if this fell short of setting a new January record ($41.5 million).

Okay so it should be the biggest January weekend ever, and the 2nd-to-4th-biggest R-rated weekend.
It'll be the biggest R-rated Best Picture nominee this century, even adjusted for inflation. The bar's not that high, only like $167 mil.
3rd-biggest day for a Best Picture nominee, after one day each from the billion-dollar finales for LOTR/Toy Story.

Looks like you were right ! But I feel like it has a lot of other fActors going for it that 'Lone Survivor' didn't have aside from star power.

Movies with multiple $30 mil days, that aren't sequels:
Spider-Man 44, 39, 32, 31
Hunger Games 67, 50, 35
Guardians of the Galaxy 38, 31
Iron Man 37, 35
HP and the Sorcerer's Stone 34, 32
However, 3 of these are based on comic-book superheroes and the other 2 are based on huge YA bestselling series.
The only R-rated film with multiple $30 mil days is Matrix II.

Thoughts on Insurgent?
I really hope it's bigger than the first
I'm predicting 180M, though my heart wants it past 200M

Lead acting nominees since 1990 that ended up in the T5 of their year:
Gump/Titanic/Ryan 1, Cast 2, Pirates/Wolves 3, Lambs/Pretty/Gladiator/Jerry 4.
Sniper should be between #1 and #3.
