The headline number is that, in value terms, the market grew a further 11% last year to a worth of NOK 603m ($98m). Streaming is the golden child here, with its value contribution last year increasing by 60% to a value of NOK 394m ($64m). I don't think it's the end, I think the industry is simply changing. Money is still being made, people will still always make music.

I wonder if artists are actually seeing this money.

No it didn't.
Edit: I understand what you mean, but the true iTunes-esque premium experience is still subscription-based.

I love this. Accessibility raises competition. I'm not gonna listen to bad music when something better is a click away. This should make it harder for artists with less talent to overshadow those with lots of talent. My $10 to Spotify is money very well spent.

Business Matters: Streaming Drove 5% Recorded Music Growth In Sweden In 2013
As streaming gains were able to compensate for declines in purchases, total recorded music revenues grew to 991.2 million SEK ($152.2 million). Although revenue is 40% below the peak in 2000, 2013 was the third straight year of growth and revenue is up 27% over the last five years.
Streaming revenue grew 30.3% to 705.9 million SEK ($109.8 million) to account for 71.2% of total recorded music revenue, up from 57.4% in 2012.
Purchases fall sharply again in 2013. CD losses deepened as revenue declined 164 million SEK ($25.5 million) after dropping 192 million SEK ($29.9 million) in 2012. Download sales declined 22.6%, or 12.9 million SEK ($2 million), after falling 24.7%, or 18.7 million SEK ($2.9 million), in 2012.
Streaming: $109.8 million
CD: $25.5 million
download: $2 million

My music was added to Spotify in September of 2010; through the most recent report, which runs through November 2013, I’ve had over 57 million plays and they’ve paid me out $334,636 with over $200,000 of that coming in 2013.
|
$334,636 / 57,000,000 streams = $0.00587 per stream for this indie musician.

I’m not going to argue about whether or not streaming canalizes sales; of course it does, and anyone who tries to convince you differently is selling snake oil and magic beans. Regardless of that fact, what I’m seeing is a marked increase in revenue because so much of my music is now being consumed by so many people. I’d argue that many of these people wouldn’t have taken the opportunity to listen to me in the first place if they didn’t have the option to check me out on Spotify without any initial monetary commitment.
Until a few years ago, I was deriving 95% of my income from selling digital singles.
If there’s anyone who should be afraid of streaming, it’s me. Instead, I’m watching my fanbase grow exponentially.

Spotify drove a large part of the 75% jump Universal Music Group achieved in 2013 in subscription and streaming revenue, according to a source familiar with the music group’s financial statements.
During the conference call, Vivendi reported that the company's digital streaming and subscription revenue grew to 450 million euros ($618 million) in 2013, up 75% from the 257 million euros ($353 million) that channel had generated in the previous year.

A report today from Australia:
Quote:
Figures show music streaming revenue almost doubled in 2013 and now makes up 5.9% of the total market value, while total digital download revenue stayed steady in 2013 with an increase of 0.5%, as digital album unit sales rose 7.88%. This increase in digital revenue across downloads and streaming did not make up for a decrease of 25.5% in physical revenue

RIAA 2013 numbers are out:
http://76.74.24.142/2463566A-FF96-E0...779A364D01.pdf
Streaming Revenue 2012: $1,032.8 million USD (up 59%)
Singles Download Revenue 2012: $1,623.6 million USD (up 6.7%)
Streaming Revenue 2013: $1.439 billion USD (up 39.3%)
Singles Download Revenue 2013: $1.569 billion USD (down 3.4%)
It is very likely that streaming revenue has surpassed singles download revenue sometimes in early 2014.
End of 2014 prediction (25% growth in streaming vs 5% decline in singles digital revenue)
With a 25% growth rate in 2014, streaming revenue will be at $1.439 billion x 1.25 = $1.8 billion USD
With a 5% decline in singles download revenue in 2014, singles download revenue in 2014 will be $1.49 billion USD

Dust is the original MaRy.
But I still like owning my songs and playing it without hassles i.e. in a remote province with no 3G or LTE.

Spotify has offline mode.
You can download up to 3,333 songs to play without any internet / 2G/3G/4G LTE connection.
It won't cost your data plan a single megabyte.

Look like Apple want to get into the on-demand streaming subscription game. $9.99 a month probably?

Apple Mulls Launching Spotify Rival, Android App as Downloads Decline
Quote:
Apple has opened exploratory talks with senior label executives about the possibility of launching an on-demand streaming service that would rival Spotify and Beats Music, according to three people familiar with the talks. Apple is also thinking about adding an iTunes App for Android phones, the Google rival that has been growing faster than the iPhone, these sources said. The surprising discussions are part of a multi-pronged strategy to deal with the double-digit decline in U.S. download sales at Apple’s iTunes Music Store, the largest music retailer.
U.S. digital album sales are down 13 percent for the week ended March 9, and digital track sales are down 11 percent from last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Even as download sales have deteriorated, revenue from streaming services have grown, according to two reports released on March 18. The first, from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), showed that streaming services such as Spotify, Pandora and YouTube generated $1.4 billion in subscription, advertising and licensing revenues in the U.S. last year, up 39 percent from 2012, while downloads revenue were down 3.2 percent to $2.9 billion. The second report, from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), painted a similar picture, albeit on a global scale. Streaming music revenue grew 51 percent worldwide, while downloads slipped 2.1 percent.
