Her identifying as bisexual was like one of the least-talked about things she did as her career was taking off. Nobody cares, really.
You can argue that playing gay clubs/events helped her get her foot in the door, but she could have done just the same as a straight blonde pop star with a theatrical performance style. She'd still have hordes of gay fans, although that wouldn't necessarily translate into mainstream success (like I said, she's compromised her commercial appeal this era by emphasizing the gay aspect).
All the pop stars have tons of gay fans, that's just the way it goes. Gaga could have never even paid lip service to gay rights and she'd still be a gay icon. Look at Britney, she's not really any sort of activist and yet her gay fans are basically what she has left sticking by her now.
