Gulf News Review - Bruno Mars’ a treat for Dubai fans

The singer impressed with his voice and moves on his Middle East debut.

How did the sold-out Dubai audience express its love for US singer-songwriter Bruno Mars at his UAE debut on Friday night? You mean apart from the sea of trilbys in the Dubai Media City Amphitheatre?

The Filipino-American hitmaker is famous for his retro style, and a significant segment of the 15,000 people who packed the venue took his look to heart, sporting hats in his honour. When Mars hit the stage just after 9pm, fans were rewarded: he was also wearing a brimmed white hat — and he kept it on throughout his smile-inducing one hour-plus performance.

So, smiles were already in place when Mars came on with his fantastic band, dressed in Hawaiian shirts (he was raised in the island state) and plenty of medallions around his neck, giving a further retro feel to the night, a tribute to everything from the ’50s (such as with his doo-wop interlude), ‘70s (especially his latest hit, ‘When I Was Your Man’) and heavy inspiration from Michael Jackson.

The guys in his band deserve a big shout-out: armed with saxophones, trumpets and trombones, they added to the kick-your-heels up atmosphere as they danced in unison across the stage and when requested by Mars, crouched down in an R&B pose as part of a serenade to a lucky girl in the audience during ‘Just The Way You Are’.

During his slow jams, it was time for the couples in the audience to sway together, and during his hits, such as ‘Billionaire’, it was time to twist and shout (he cheekily added a portion of Barrett Strong’s ‘Money’ and Aloe Blacc’s ‘I Need A Dollar’ to the track).

There were moments where he barely even needed to sing — although his voice is incredible — as the crowd sang so loudly on tracks such as ‘Beautiful Girls’, ‘Just The Way You Are’, ‘Grenade’, and his massive recent hit,the saucy ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’. Everything was massively danceable, even songs this reporter had not heard before, with many audience members having fun imitating the moves seen on stage.

But some fans may have been left disappointed by one omission, the silly ‘Lazy Song’ with its gorilla dance. Come back again, Bruno, and make sure you bring that one with you.

The lights' effects were amazing. Reminds me of it will rain performance on Xfactor.
