I was disappointed by La Roux and Chromeo's releases this year tbh I expected so much more but I thought Chromeo's hooks were really lazy and La Roux's were nonexistent
Your previous set is what I prefer. Kimbra's album is good and TRUST! They're like, the best. You didn't like Geryon or the title track though?
I liked La Roux album sorta. The first few times I was kind of indifferent but then it grew on me. Lots of other albums I've been meaning to try.
And... slightly off topic but maybe not? I kinda irrationally hate Chromeo. Their song "Jealous" was deathly overplayed on radio and it turned me off from them as a whole.
El Pintor is really good! I didn't have enough time to check the rest of the albums but I wanted to listen to Weezer's comeback and Chormeo's 'White Women' since I liked almost all their singles.
Now reading your blurb has made me want to listen to Weezer's new album. I love their stuff from 2001-2006 but after that I was kinda disappointed about them, pretty much the situation you described
Trust me, if you're one of those fans that I described, you're going to LOVE this album. It's basically the album those hardcore fans have wanted for years.

yasssssssssss Trust on the previous album set! It's one of my favourite albums of the year, it's just so good. Have you checked TRST? It's a bit darker than Joyland, but still amazing. I really liked La Roux and Chromeo from this one. Also, "sexiest album of the year"? Am I right about thinking of a certain album?
You might be. Oh, and I have not listened to TRST yet, but I intend to next year.

And Weezer! My feelings on the album are a little bit different, because i'm a weirdo outlier Weezer fan who kind of loves Raditude and Hurley more than EWBAITE, but your write-up is still really great and well-argued. In particular you are spot-on about Rivers in the first paragraph, something that fans need to realize! I wish I could print that paragraph up and shove it in their faces! Okay, that's a bit aggressive haha.
I will readily admit that your love of that era of Weezer (hell, and mine) was a big catalyst for that mini-rant. It just blows me away how personally Weezer fans took those albums, as if they were an affront to their existence. As much as I love it...it's just music, people, not life and death. Those assholes (not saying you, Link, I don't mean you at all!) need to get a ****ing grip.

Trouble In Paradise is amazing. Glad you think LMDG is the best song, all that I've seen on ATRL is that people think it's a weak song.
Oh god, I know, and I don't understand it. It's easily La Roux's best song. I mean, it's not even close.

I LOVE the title track! It was under my "Favorite Tracks"! "Geryon" and "Are We Arc?" are pretty good, too. I just liked the two main singles so freaking much, though.

That's a shame, because they're definitely more than just "Jealous", and overplay is quite the cruel mistress. I do hope you get over the irrational hatred and check out some of their stuff, though. I adore them.
The next set is pretty much ready to go, so I'll see you guys soon!
There's a part of me that almost wants a new Paramore album every year, if only to listen to Hayley Williams' transcendent voice every year. Heck, thanks to some soundtrack songs, bonus material and Hayley appearances on other artists' work, we've come pretty close to actually acheiving that. But sometimes, there's going to be a bit of a lull and a lack of activity from Hayley and/or Paramore. When that time comes, I tend to seek out new artists that could potentially be the "next" Paramore, as if such a thing is really possible. Well, this year, I think I may have finally found the artist that could truly be the "next" Paramore. Like Paramore, the band started as a five-piece. Also like Paramore, they have whittled down that lineup to a trio, featuring a female vocalist and two male musicians behind her. And like Paramore, the female vocalist is the true star of the bunch. That band is PVRIS. They're basically Paramore if Paramore performed nothing but the harder material from their albums, and their main strength is in the incendiary vocals of its singer. Lead singer Lynn Gunn is basically my favorite female-singer-in-a-band discovery since Hayley, with incredible, stadium-worthy pipes and a presence that few female singers can match. Just listen to "St. Patrick", especially the chorus, to get an idea of what I'm talking about. If their first full-length album, White Noise, is any indication, I cannot wait to see what this Massachusetts trio has in store for us in the future.

Every year, I come across at least critically acclaimed album that I never would have given a chance otherwise had it not been so crticially acclaimed and fall in love with said album. Last year, that album was CHVRCHES' The Bones of What You Believe. This year, that album came to us from a young English singer-songwriter who has created something that can only be described as what would happen if Portishead and Beyonce had a baby. There were times where I struggled somewhat with LP1, the...well, first full-length album from FKA twigs. There were times where my mind struggled to comprehend what I was listening to. Hell, there were times where I felt genuinely offput and weirded out by what my ears were listening to, as if the sounds coming together just don't make any sense at all. Then, there were times where I felt aroused by what I was listening to, mostly because of the vocals of Tahliah Barnett, whose voice is so sensual that it will likely lead to a new generation of "sex songs". And by the end of the album, I found myself appreciating the sounds that were coming together. When those sounds are at their most potent, it's enchanting. "Hours" is absolutely unbelievable, basically the song equivalent of a particularly amazing sexual experience. "Pendulum" is the best vocal showcase on the album, and that's a pretty strong statement, seeing as I think that the vocal performance throughout the album is consistently strong. And while I would be lying if I said that the first half of the album didn't completely outshine the second half (and the second half is pretty good, too!), that first half...wow. Easily the sexiest album of the year, and also one of the year's best.
If you've followed the career trajectory of TV on the Radio, then this album actually makes more sense than it may seem at first. Dear Science was the beginning of a gradual shift into poppy love song territory, a shift that was punctuated by Nine Types of Light, and a shift that has been fully realized with Seeds. Make no mistake about it: Seeds is a pop album masquerading as an alternative album. Just listen to "Quartz", the first track on the album. That song is so poppy that Return to Cookie Mountain-era TVOTR seems like the weirdest and most out-there music on the planet in comparison. But, like TVOTR in the past, it's also incredibly catchy, just as the rest of the album is. TV on the Radio's greatest strength has always been its catchiness, despite the music surrounding it, and that's certainly the case here. But take a closer look at the album and the band's recent history and you might see a different perspective. This is the first album made by the band since the death of their bassist, Gerard Smith. In a lot of ways, whereas Nine Types of Light served as a mournful farewell to their beloved bandmate, Seeds is the means of coming to terms with his death. The first couple of tracks, particularly "Happy Idiot", deal with the immediate feeling of loss and denial that the band must have felt after Smith's death. But by the end of the album, the band sounds almost joyful and optimistic, finally being able to move on, even if only barely, from such a tragic moment in all of their lives. The deeper meaning here helps to elevate this album from a subpar TV on the Radio album (which is still better than many artists' best efforts) to an album worthy of standing alongside what is quickly becoming a staggering discography of great albums.
With the next set, we hit the top 5! Albums 7-5 will feature an old Red staple releasing their best album in over a decade, another old Red staple...releasing their best album in over a decade, and yet another old Red staple who released a good album that was lifted into something more by two FANTASTIC songs. See you guys then.
Oh, and I'm still holding off on TRST until 2015. Too much year-end stuff to do. Sorry, madonnas.
This update: You should out Marmozets if you are in Paramore. Not quite the same, but similar enough and yet satisfy a whole new craving you never wouldve expected! Actually they sound very similar to this PVRIS band, first time I'm hearing of them, so I'll have to check that out.
I've only heard the one FKA Twigs song and I wasn't feeling it. It's getting mad praise from alot of people who have similar taste as myself though, so maybe thats a case of first impression being off.
I'm glad you loved Seeds so much!
I think I already know what #1 is, but I'm curious to see where else you go. Good diversity so far.
I don't know who FKA twigs are, but I've seen a lot about them on here lately Definitely need to give them a listen!
TV on the Radio! I really like this band! Their previous album was amazing! I still need to check out this new one, but I really like "Happy Idiot"
I’m here for THE Red’s Best of where we find out whatever he finishes or not. It’s going to be a ride for sure. Good news that I have finished deciding which songs will be on my countdown so get ready for the first update after I finish commenting.
2013: What a great top 60 esp. the #1 and the #2. Epic.
You-tube: Must watch these later, but the Hogan and Cena one is funny. I recently watch the #1 video out of curiosity since there has been memes and you-tube comments (What a sh!tty place to look at) about using that phrase. I was weird out and damn.
Top 15 songs of the past: Seems the theme of the Best of 2014 is not only celebrate this year, but also to say goodbyes, hellos, celebrating a forever work of art, and old glory. My favs here are Team, The Man Who Sold the World, and Heaven and Hell. I must make time to listen to the others that for some reason I never heard of. I should focus on listening to older music and going deeper to some artists’ discography.
Albums:
20-16: Foxes. Her music is so lovely. Like the lead singles from everyone else. Must hear their albums esp. Jack.
15-11: Chromeo. I liked Jealous (I ain’t with it). Listening to Old 45’s and such a fun song to sing along to. Love the sound. A great futuristic bass it is and piano notes. The two lead singles of El Pintor are great. Loved listening to them in which both have different approaches of sound to drive it back home. I listened to The Feast and The Famine back at the old doctor’s thread and I liked it. Such a great rocking experience. Outside sounds like a good mix of lighter sound and the rock sound that sent me to wonderful places. Something From Nothing is a good to rock out to and it’s somewhere in my countdown that I actually know unlike other songs. Must hear this album and I hope I can watch the HBO series someday. Must hear Weezer’s album also. To me, I didn’t mind their music in recent years, just wasn’t their best that’s all. Damn. Never knew you really hated Back to the Shack. Sadly, (Spoiler) it’s the only song from them that will be on the countdown since it was the only song I heard from the album until today. I heard Da vinci in a You-Tube ad as where Weezer was playing this song in some car showcase or something and it’s amazing. I listened to Cleopatra and it also amazing. A good one for sure.
10-8: Listening to Fire and it’s so amazing. This chick has strong pipes. She goes well with this hard rocking sound this band has. St. Patrick is another good song that combine the hard sound with the authentic and alt.pop dance sound and the singer knows how to be true to herself and make the sound work with her. Must here this album. No wonder it’s was in other Best ofs. I heard of Two Weeks and It was quite interesting. This one quite big around ATRL it seems. I liked Happy Idiot. Seeds the song has an amazing sound to wonder about and appreciate the way the vocals blend in with the spectacular atmosphere. Got to listen to their album. Heard what happened to one of their members from Calvin and friends’ NK Best of. Hah, Madonna.
Awesome Best of so far. Great commentary that tries to get the lazy self of me to go listen and make a comment about it. Let’s see if you can bring us more tasty updates. Now, I must take off and go to my own thread where I will prepare my first update after the Best of has started for a week.
