29 THESE NEW PURITANS Fragment Two
That repetitive piano riff which shapes These New Puritans’ fantastic 2013 track “Fragment Two” sounds so brilliant it seems impossible no one has used it before. But while you stay for the incredible foundation, the entire song acts not unlike a liquid, filling in each space with its flowing musicality. It’s not in-your-face with its intentions, preferring to take a circuitous path to eliciting a response from its audience.
28 JANELLE MONÁE What an Experience
27 BIG SEAN, KENDRICK LAMAR & JAY ELECTRONICA Control (HOF)
There’s only one reason for “Control (HOF)” ending up in a year-end best of list. And that reason is obviously Kendrick Lamar, who delivered the greatest, most intimidating verse of the year with his takedown of every rapper this side of Kanye West. After the phenomenal and very much deserved success of good kid, m.A.A.d. city, Lamar has every right to boast of being “Machiavelli’s offspring / the king of New York.” If that bothers you, you haven’t been listening.
26 A$AP ROCKY Suddenly
“I swear this famous **** just happened overnight,” begins “Suddenly,” the closing track on A$AP Rocky’s major label debut Long.Live.A$AP. It’s hard to blame him for thinking such a thing, as his ascendence from hip-hop outlier with a phenomenal, highly influential mixtape to touring the world with Rihanna and performing with Big Boi and Skrillex was done with a lightning quickness. What makes “Suddenly” stand out as the best moment from his debut, then, comes from a couple of factors. Firstly, Rocky himself produced the cut, and it’s haunting production is one of the most compelling on his record. Secondly, I don’t know if I’ve ever heard Rocky rap in such an introspective manner. Those two factors combine to create a fascinating whole, and the rapper’s vocal dexterity shines through, as he’s able to flow naturally thanks to the wonderful construction of his own creation.
25 PUSHA T Numbers on the Board
24 DAFT PUNK Get Lucky
I remember when “Get Lucky” was first released; it was only days after the horrific Boston Marathon bombings and the ensuing manhunt to capture the Tsarnaev brothers. Something about the timing of Daft Punk’s biggest hit to date seemed fitting, as if they were lifting the weight of the world off our backs, and telling it’s okay to dance… and sometimes, you just need to be lucky.
23 VAMPIRE WEEKEND Hannah Hunt
“Hannah Hunt” is the show-stopping track midway through Vampire Weekend’s stunning 2013 collection. Lead singer Ezra Koenig still writes lyrics in a way that only he can, yet he’s refined the process to get the strongest emotional pull out of its listener as possible. The climactic finale only cements the song’s placement in the upper echelon of the year.

30 ALUNAGEORGEBody Music
Meeting expectations after a great first couple of singles can be difficult, if not impossible. Just ask Lana Del Rey. But AlunaGeorge was able to defy the norm and capitalize on the success of their 2012 singles with the airy, sensual Body Music.
29 SKY FERREIRANight Time, My Time
Sky Ferreira was able to push her personal demons to the side on the exquisite Night Time, My Time. She hardly sounds out of place on the grunge-pop record; in fact, she’s never sounded as in control of her musical direction, and that includes her flawless 2012 single “Everything Is Embarrassing.”
28 POSTILJONENSkyer
It’s fitting that there is not much information out there on Postiljonen, who somehow flew beneath the radar the entire year following their gorgeous debut, Skyer. We do know they’re from Stockholm, and consist of members Mia Brox Bøe, Joel Nyström Holm, and Daniel Sjörs. It’s also quite evident from Skyer that while they are comfortable residing on the outskirts of the mainstream, sooner or later they’ll be forced to feed the demand.
With Acid Rap, Chance The Rapper resigned from the minor leagues and declared himself a major force in the hip-hop community. He provided an excellent verse to the overlooked “Wendy ‘N Becky,” his collaboration with Joey Bada$$, and ended 2013 with a cosign from none other than Justin Bieber on one of his weekly singles. But Acid Rap is his crown jewel, full of memorable moments and vocal and lyrical displays that show Chance (and please say The Rapper) to have already carved out for himself a particular sound and image he can call his very own.
26 SAVAGESSilence Yourself
If you need an album to drown out the sound of the crazies trying to hijack women’s reproductive organs, look no further than the visceral and intense Silence Yourself.
25 PHOSPHORESCENTMuchacho
Much more than just a couple of great highlights (there are those, too), Muchacho is a fully realized work from an artist breaking through and finding musical nirvana.
24 ARCADE FIREReflektor
The reception to Reflektor could not have been more divisive. While most critiques began with the Grammy winning group performing a two-month promotional campaign, they ended with arguments against Reflektor‘s sprawling runtime and its more heady moments. But if you can reconcile the one time independent music darlings going to the big leagues, then Reflektor reveals itself to be an exciting and interesting shift in the band’s sound. And anytime James Murphy is involved with a production, the result can never be poor. It’s science.
23 JENNY HVALInnocence Is Kinky
The left-field Innocence Is Kinky, from Norwegian singer Jenny Hval, is probably the strangest thing I heard all year. Hval chirps and whistles her way through many tracks, which also feature some guttural and raw productions. When an album begins with a singer whispering, “At night, I watch people ****ing on my computer,” there’s really only one direction for it to go.
22 JON HOPKINSImmunity
Jon Hopkins could have probably gone on and lived in obscurity after his collaborations with mega-superstars Coldplay, but he has been kind enough to deliver some of the best music in recents years, with his collaborative album also featuring King Creosote, as well as his 2013 solo effort. Immunity is one of the most affecting electronica music albums released this year, and without a doubt Hopkins best.
21 VOLCANO CHOIRRepave
Justin Vernon’s time is mostly occupied by music, or so it seems after his very busy past couple of years. Following 2011′s Bon Iver, Bon Iver, he’s recorded with Kanye West on Yeezus, as well as performing in the bands The Shouting Matches and Volcano Choir. The latter’s 2013 album Repave marked his biggest stride to hitting the emphatic notes of his music with Bon Iver, and it’s band mentality shines through with each member providing their own spotlight.
Night Time My Time is probably my least favorite from that album... Body Music
You mean "Boys"? Or that it's your least favorite from this set? If it's the former, I'm just picking the first track on each album, since I can't post links to full albums from Spotify on here.
Recover is good. My fave from this set is Get Lucky! Love that song since the first listen, I'm not tired of that song. Body Music is an amazing album, love it
SINGLES: Trying To Be Cool, Falling, Sacrilege, Do I Wanna Know?, 3 Days, Recover, What an Experience, Suddenly, Numbers on the Board, Get Lucky, Hannah Hunt, Blood on the Leaves
Why does "Dip" sound like it samples "****** In Paris" though? It's hot.
ALBUMS: Name Is My Name, True Romance, Shaking the Habitual, The 20/20 Experience, Body Music, Night Time, My Time, Reflektor
Makes no damn sense
I'll be checking out WAXAHATCHEE, BATHS, Chance and Danny Brown, I hear/see too much about them.
Do I wanna know? NO. Stop trying to be cool. It's sacrilege. Now, recover suddenly. There may be blood on the leaves. Maybe you got lucky...Hannah Hunt.
I think that the IDEA of Reflektor was better than the execution, but I think that it can be improved upon with future collaborations with James Murphy. I hope they do try again.

20 JAGWAR MA The Throw
19 RUSTIE Slasherr
The line between heavy metal and electronica has never been closer than on Rustie’s earth-shattering 2013 single “Slasherr.” The song shoots the speakers like chainsaws on ice, and the bloodbath that ensues is both cleansing and a whoooole lot of cleanup.
18 KURT VILE Goldtone
The closing track off Kurt Vile’s Walkin’ On A Pretty Daze is also its best. “Goldtone” slowly unfurls over 10 minutes, but it doesn’t matter, because like leaving a party too early, you want to hang on to every last note, before it ends.
17 CHANCE THE RAPPER (FEAT. BJ THE CHICAGO KID) Good Ass Intro
Leave it to a precocious teenage rapper to make an intro track one of the best of the year. “Good Ass Intro” is one hell of an opening statement for Chance The Rapper, who is full of taunts and has the support system to back them up. “If you ever actually hit me, better watch out for my brother / Better yet I’ll take that deal, better watch out for my mother,” he raps.
16 SAVAGES She Will
15 THE NATIONAL Pink Rabbits
14 CHARLI XCX What I Like
Charli XCX’s 2013 was one she won’t soon forget. Besides assisting in Icona Pop’s spring hit single “I Love It,” she also released her own album of some of the best pop music of the year. One of the best of the lot is “What I Like,” which features an assured and confident vocal performance from XCX, all held together by another one of her indelible electro-pop productions.
13 THE UNDERACHIEVERS Herb Shuttles
12 BLOOD ORANGE You're Not Good Enough
11 TORRES Honey
Torres‘ kicked off the year on a right note, as “Honey” stormed out of the gate with a delicate intensity no one was able to match in 2013. “Oh honey / While you were ashing in your coffee / I was thinking bout telling you / What you’ve done to me,” sings Torres, exposing her soul in the process. It’s her ability to mix the mundane with the illuminating, and how those two never see eye-to-eye, that creates a devastating portrait of at least one musician’s young life.

20 DRAKENothing Was the Same
Drake continues to grow as an artist with Nothing Was The Same. The title can also act as a description of hip-hop since Drizzy’s arrival on the scene some years ago.
19 DEERHUNTERMonomania
The relatively low-key Monomania had a singular focus, and it delivered on its goals. Bradford Cox, Locket Pundt, and company continue to be one of the most essential acts in the independent music scene, and they wear the badge of elder statesmen pretty damn well.
18 RUN THE JEWELSRun The Jewels
How do you follow up two of the best releases in rap during 2012? By combining your talents to create an even greater 2013 event. That’s exactly what El-P and Killer Mike did with their Run The Jewels project, which sounded so confident and authoritative it made most of their competitors look like they were playing in the sandbox.
17 RHYEWoman
A lot of people mistook Milosh’s vocals in Rhye’s mysterious 2012 singles as the voice of a female vocalist, largely due to their airy, delicate, and sensual delivery. Rhye’s ode to the female form was fully fleshed out, a breathtaking display of meditation.
16 DAFT PUNKRandom Access Memories
Nile Rogers first hinted at Daft Punk’s return in 2012, but no one wanted to get too excited about the prospect of the enigmatic French electronica artists reappearing anytime soon. And then it happened. And the world rejoiced. Random Access Memories recalls a time when music came about organically, which is rather ironic considering the duo built their name on 21st century electronica ethos. After building the blueprint for today’s musical landscape, they flipped the script in a way that only the robots could.
15 M.I.A.Matangi
Matangi brought M.I.A. back right where she belongs. The album undid any ill feelings lingering after her difficult third LP and her middle-finger flipping stunt during the Super Bowl. Like her or not, it’s impossible to ignore that M.I.A. is one of the most fearless voices in pop right now.
14 CHVRCHESThe Bones of What You Believe
Blissful synth-pop is the basic M.O. for Glasgow’s Chvrches. “The Mother We Share” signaled the group as a force demanding our attention, and The Bones Of What You Believe stands tall among its many peers.
13 TORRESTorres
Releasing an album in January can be risky. People and organizations have just ended compiling their year-end lists, and many are in need of a brief respite from the perpetual music release cycle. Yet Torres was able to transcend her early 2013 self-titled release, which featured some of the most honest, gut-wrenching musical moments from a singer-songwriter this year.
12 LORDEPure Heroine
Lorde’s debut still seems too good to be true, even months after its release. She owned the fall months with her single “Royals,” and she proved to be worth all the attention when Pure Heroine announced that Lorde is destined to be much more than a one-hit wonder.
11 BLOOD ORANGECupid Deluxe
Dev Hynes really came out of his shell in 2012, as his work as producer for Solange and Sky Ferreira helped cement his place among contemporary R&B’s most fascinating artists. 2013′s Cupid Deluxe pushed Hynes to further explore his musical ambitions, and his work with collaborators including members of Chairlift and Dirty Projectors, as well as Clams Casino and girlfriend/Friends’ frontwoman Samantha Urbani, showed that not only does Hynes have a strong musical vision, but he’s capable of employing many different voices to help achieve the same goal.
