I think what's interesting about this year is the Best Picture winner. There are a LOT of films which are now fighting for it: Argo, Life of Pi, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, Les Misèrables, Zero Dark Thirty. Who the **** is going to win?
My money's still on either Argo or Lincoln, though Les Mis is starting to pick up some steam. Those three are the prohibitive favorites until proven otherwise.

I think Leo is the favorite for Best Supporting Actor, and I'm still hearing rumblings about Tarantino and the film itself possibly getting nominations, but we'll see once we get closer to the film's release.
The film The Master. I could deal with Joaquin Phoenix getting nominated as he was great but the movie wasn't. (and I'm usually a fan of PT Anderson's films)
Oh I hardly think so, The Master will sweep nominations, it's undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed movies of the year. The problem is that the movie is from pre-September, so the hype is not as big as other recent movies, but the Weinsteins will work their magic.
The Master is getting: Best Movie, Best Director, Original Screenplay, Lead for Joaquin and Supporting for Phillip and Amy.

The Master will win at least one of the Male Acting Oscars, possibly both, but otherwise will only be nominated.
I'm still yet to see SLP but I think the hype around Anne for LM will be too great, she has been everywhere this year and will nab the Best Actress.

Anne is going to Supporting Actress. Like you said, the hype will be big, and it looks like she killed it from what we've seen. I think she'll take it, unless the Academy decides to give Sally Field a third Oscar or finally awards Amy Adams.

Don't forget Helen Hunt too, she's getting enormous praise for The Sessions.

Adams' role was good, but she doesn't the big Oscar scene. For sure to be nominated. I think Anne's biggest competition right now is Sally Field, but like Gui said... Helen Hunt, too.
So is there really a front runner for Supporting Actress like how Jennifer is the front runner for Best Actress?
Anne has been the front runner for awhile now and the only person she really has going against her is Sally Field BUT Anne will win.
I don't think Leo has a chance at all for Best Supporting Actor, right now I think that will go to Tommy Lee Jones but that field is so open that I am not even sure about that.
Tomorrow the New York Film Critics announce their winners and the Satellite Award nominations come out.

I'm not really into film awards that much. What's important with the NYFC awards and is Anne expected to win?

It's the OFFICIAL start of the awards season and critics choice awards are always fun to watch because they give an inkling as to who are the front runners for the Oscars, Golden Globes, SAG Awards, and the BAFTAs. From what I have seen, I think Anne is the prediction to win Best Supporting Actress.
So I take it that this is going to be the thread to use for critics choice awards and things like that?

Someone should rename it to the Oscar season thread or something.

Critics awards and all other precursors like the Globes can swing a race one way or the other. A major critics win can put someone on the map that previously had no buzz, or help someone gain momentum that was maybe stalling?
They were better years ago, though, before it seemed like their sole purpose was to just predict the Oscars. Now you get Reese Witherspoon sweeping the critics award for crap like Walk the Line, ugh.

It was such a weak year in 2006 when Reese won for actresses, her only competition was Felicity Huffman for Transamerica. Looking back on it, Felicity probably gave the better performance, but Reese was the bigger star. Her career has really gone downhill since she won the Oscar, she needs to stop with these romantic comedies.

I will never get over the fact that Felicity Huffman lost. She was flawless in Transamerica and, IMO, it wasn't even close. She deserved it. That was her BIG BREAK if she won, and like you said not gone to waste because Reese's career is practically nonexistant compared to then.
