You basically summed it all up.
What most people (Christians, primarily) don't realize is that Christianity isn't even an original religion. It borrows from so many different religions, Paganism being one of them. Most of the rules that Christians are expected to follow date back long before "Jesus" existed. Marriage, I'm sure, existed long before then. Of course, they likely weren't raised to believe that two men or two women being together is a bad thing. How do people think marriage came about? Just like everything else - through trial and error. I'm sure there were men that married eachother thousands of years ago, until they came up with the obsolete model of "marriage" - which is a man and a woman.
