That type of marriage is called civil marriage, and that's the type of marriage gay people are fighting for. It has existed for thousands of years. That's the marriage you perform when you go to the courthouse and sign those documents.

Religious marriage is completely different, it's performed in a Church and has nothing to do with the State. No law forces Churches to marry gay people...and gay people don't want that. Churches are a separate entity from the State and deserve the freedom to do as they please with regards to marriage.

What most people (Christians, primarily) don't realize is that Christianity isn't even an original religion. It borrows from so many different religions, Paganism being one of them. Most of the rules that Christians are expected to follow date back long before "Jesus" existed. Marriage, I'm sure, existed long before then. Of course, they likely weren't raised to believe that two men or two women being together is a bad thing. How do people think marriage came about? Just like everything else - through trial and error. I'm sure there were men that married eachother thousands of years ago, until they came up with the obsolete model of "marriage" - which is a man and a woman.

I have no issues with people disagreeing with my sexuality nor do I have issues with people disagreeing with what rights I have. but I deserve respect. and I'm sure other gays feel this way as well. 90% of homophobic comments are made by Straight men. No it wouldn't shock me, I live in the South and people here always go around preaching about the Bible but they are the ones doing the most dirt, it's just absurd and makes a mockery out of the religion.
