Yes, that is common knowledge. For theatre. Where a microphone would ruin the dramatic effect of the acting.
Not for a live singing performance on the VMAs. What would be the point of that, especially when it's being broadcast over TV and hair microphones sacrifice sound quality?
The sound quality of that performance is not conducive to it being recorded on a microphone hidden in her hair.
