Yes, Applause and Work Bitch is something different in pop, but overall people's heard it before. It's nothing bad. Generic does not equal bad and the word "generic" has a bad stigma to it. "Roar" is a recent number one that is generic, generic is not a bad thing.

No, generic is not just about the sound, lyrics can also be generic.

For me:
Generic Production + Generic Lyrics = Generic
Not Generic Production + Generic Lyrics = Not Generic
Generic Production + Not Generic Lyrics = Not Generic
Not Generic Production + Not Generic Lyrics = Not Generic

So IMO Applause and Work Bitch are NOT generic.

Every single last song you named is generic Like I'm literally HOLLERING. Have you listened to music from before 2009? Dance-pop/EDM/etc. are all much, much newer than the sounds utilized in those songs. Like I'm ****ing weak STIUK was even noted for sounding like The Police when it first came out. Royals sounds like a generic 90s song. Blurred Lines sounds like Prince.

Lyrically they're not generic but musically they "might" be regarded as generic in the sense that some lame peeps definition of "generic" is "not groundbreaking and turning music upside down".

What they are is essentially bolder EDM tracks (bold by mainstream pop single standards).

You know what truly generic is? The word generic - it's way overstretched. To me that should only mean what it originally meant: something that doesn't stand out. If it stands out - if it musically grabs attention and makes you twitch the volume in the right direction, then it is not generic (regardless of whether the musical composition is new, current or old/revival...
