I posted this in the base but this is my take on the album 2 weeks later
I get Legend Karen's point about this is where Britney is at 20 years after being scrutinies but the problem is that there's not enough IDENTITY in the album.
There's nothing wrong with making trendy songs here and there
there are a few songs that have a britney identity but if they got rid of 3 more songs and replaced it with songs that have more of an identity then I think it would have balanced out glory to become a solid top 3 Britney album.
Possibly #1 or #2.
Glory:
Bolded songs could be signature hits or songs
Songs with a Britney identity:
Make me
Do you wanna come over? (Very 2001 naughty innocent tease esque but she's reasserting herself with renewed confidence which makes it fine)
Slumber party
Just like me - a song that actually addresses the aftermath of her breakup with David
Change your mind - a grower. Literally my least favorite in first review and now it's top 5 for me. Not sure it's single material. Gives me strong album track like Ooh ooh baby
Liar- not the freshest song but could have an epic feel if the visuals were right
If i'm dancing-signature quirk but could also be a signature song and a hit if handled right.
Songs that are trendy & lack identity but can't be replaced:
Invitation-Overly Taylor swift wildest dreams
Just luv me-Overly Bieber meets selena esque
Love me down-Very novelty but actually has the strongest chance at being a hit
Better- Brings nothing to the table. It's catchy and good but too Lean on esque and not enough Britney.
Songs without an identity and can be replaced:
Man on the moon (cute but adds nothing)
Clumsy (I use but it really doesn't add much and is every early EDM pop takeover 2011/2)
Hard to forget ya (very Nick Jonas trying to be r&b esque)
Songs that whether we love them or hate them are part of her unique quirky side and shouldn't be replaced:
Private show (quirky, to know Britney is to love her and modernizes Tina turner's private dancer)
What u need (yes it's duffy meets amy whinehouse meets her 2001 songs that didn't make the cut but it's unique and fun)
BLackout in french-Love it. Artsy fartsy
So all in all 5 signature songs, 3 with potential to be singles and had she replaced the three I mentioned with
3 songs that served introspectiion: (State of grace + I run away+ mad love ) +
1 ballad (Shadow) 1 (sexy, radio friendly jam) up n down +
1 career song like toxic then we'd have her best album to date
Whew if Glory was a 18 track album:
The invitation into Britney and finding love
1. Invitation
2. Do you wanna come over?
3. Make me (ooh)
4. Private show
5. State of grace (love is)
6. Mad love
7. Toxic like banger that's ahead of it's time, classic, quirky and worldly
Starting to question her choices and the realization that he wasn't the one for Britney
8. Change your mind
9. Just like me
10. Liar
Say F men...I just want to have fun
11. Slumber Party
12. Better
13. If i'm dancing
14. Up n down
15. What u need
Introspection and retrospection over the rollercoaster experiences that lead her to this point
16. I run away
17. Shadow
18. Blackout in french
An ALBUM. A classic. A legend. A #1 album in her trinity that had just enough trendy stuff, personal identity intro/retrospection and signature quirky unique quality
