Carrie Underwood Honored As A “Million-Air”
Lorie Hollabaugh • August 22, 2013 •
Carrie Underwood became a different kind of millionaire recently when BMI awarded her with their coveted “Million-Air” awards for songs reaching the one millionth play mark. At a reception at the Country Music Hall of Fame, Underwood received certificates for the one million performance achievements of “Mama’s Song” and “Good Girl,” and a separate award for “All-American Girl,” which has logged a staggering two million airs to date. The three tracks honored at the reception alone played back-to-back would total nearly 23 years of continuous play.
“With a catalog boasting more than 13 million performances, Carrie has become one of the most successful songwriters in country music today,” said BMI’s Vice President of Writer/Publisher Relations Jody Williams. “We at BMI could not be more proud and are excited to celebrate these continued incredible achievements with her,” said Williams.
Awarded to songwriters, composers and publishers whose songs accumulate over one million U.S. broadcast performances, the designation has been bestowed upon many revered songwriters, including Paul McCartney, Dolly Parton, and Roy Orbison. BMI Nashville presented the last “Million-Air” Awards earlier this year to songwriter Scotty Emerick to recognize his hits “I Love This Bar,” “Beer for My Horses,” “As Good As I Once Was” and “Big Blue Note.”

Fan Friday: Why Carrie Underwood’s “Wine After Whiskey” Needs to Be a Single
Carrie, you’re a habit hard to break, and why wouldn’t you be? You have gorgeous legs, impeccable taste in fashion and you know how to pick a hit song (over and over and over again). Tempo-driven songs are obviously your BFFs, and deservedly so; you pull them off marvelously. But here’s a little piece of advice: Please change things up and release a ballad as your next single.
If we Carebears know anything about Carrie’s superstar career (and let’s face it, we all have Google Alerts dedicated to her), it’s that she has been hitting it out of the park with her Blown Away album cycle. With the one-two-three-four punch that was “Good Girl,” the title track, “Two Black Cadillacs” and “See You Again,” Carrie has outdone herself. Not only is her voice in tip-top shape these days, but she truly understands how to incorporate the traditions of country into a modern, mainstream sound. These singles allowed her to broaden the scope of the genre, pushing the envelope lyrically and musically. Each of these releases also focused on driving beats that only exacerbates the songs’ stories.
While these no. 1 hits are perfect representations of Blown Away as a whole, there are some seriously emotional ballads buried within the album’s 14 tracks that could do so much for her career. And “Wine After Whiskey” is one of them; it’s perhaps one of the greatest songs she has ever recorded. The song is tender and raw, with Carrie’s vocal restraint in perfect form.
Right out of the gate, the song scorches a blazing trail to heartbreak, something Carrie doesn’t do often. In fact, Underwood has never released such a tear-jerking breakup song. Sure, she nails the sassy, boyfriend-bashing anthems (“Before He Cheats,” “Cowboy Casanova,” “Undo It”), but where is the girl behind the makeup and outrageous costumes? Where is the song about that time her man broke her heart and she spent every night drowning out her troubles with a bottle of sweet, red wine?
This song is it.
“Once upon a time, our world was on fire,” she coos on the first verse, setting up an almost fantastical story about love and loss. “And I loved to watch it burn. Wild and reckless, never any limits. Guess I had a lot to learn.”
The lyrics, which Carrie wrote alongside Tom Shapiro and David Berg, dig their heels deep into the heart, pulling out the ripped pieces and scattering them to the wind. There are no glory notes, only nuanced delivery, poise and electric agony. You can feel her pain on every word.
We never find out how her heart was broken, but we don’t need to. The way she describes the suffering, you can’t feel anything other than tearful empathy. It’s as if you’ve been betrayed, too. You join in on the sorrowful wails.
The other aspect of the song that makes it perfect as a single is its instrumentation. It’s so very country, just a mandolin and a guitar—there’s not a lick of a drum track or boisterous other pop production elements. The production is nearly entirely acoustic, and it doesn’t try to mask Carrie’s vocals. The song builds cinematically, adding layer upon layer. Nothing screams “over the top.” Its subtlety is marvelous to behold.

She should listen to her fans.

It'd be a nice change of pace, give her traditionalist fans something they'd love to hear on the radio.
