The lowdown: In a more perfect world, Lady Gaga debuts in 2005 with this braggadocio bop as her lead single. It becomes a crossover smash, luring hip-hop fans and white suburban teenagers alike with its muddled mix of luxuriating in excess and pining for love. Gaga catapults to #1 on the Hot 100 and into a heated rivalry with Ciara for diva supremacy. All is well. Instead, “Jewels ’N Drugs,” which sounds like a runaway from the album Bangerz promised to be, came out in 2013 and subsequently finds itself in last place in our rate. She’s done a transnational lesbian soap opera, but apparently urban Lady Gaga was a step too far for fans.
ATRL says...: "The second biggest misstep Gaga has ever made, musically speaking," JakeKills said. stereo.love was more blunt, deeming it "absolute ****." lovesong compared it to an SNL skit and adrianbeane said he gave himself "a tap on my shoulder for making it all the way to the second chorus." madonnas had a more positive reaction, however. "It’s self-aggrandizing bull****," he wrote, "but that’s kinda half the fun of it, no?"
Best bit: Twista goes in on his verse! It's a great reminder of the skill that made "Slow Jamz" such an infectious smash. Where has he been hiding for the past decade?
