Taylor Swift: The Results
Quote:
Taylor Swift, the self-titled debut album of the girl we know and love, was released to the public in autumn of 2006. Lead off by the single "Tim McGraw", setting the tone of Taylor's personal, raw, and truthful songwriting. The album plays out like the then 16-year-old's diary, ranging from fiery anger involving burning ex-boyfriend's photos, to the wristful longing of "Teardrops on My Guitar", it became clear that Taylor was headed for something big when "Tim McGraw hit country radios that summer.
"He Said the way my blue eyes shined, put those Georgia stars to shame that night" leads off the album. The blue eyed beauty described the bittersweet end of a summer romance. Taylor's talent for descriptive imagery of the love ranges from little black dresses, chevy trucks and forgotten letters left under the bed. The talent is imminent from the very first chord. When we think Tim McGraw, we surely think of Taylor.
Picture to Burn does a 180 as the follow up track on the album. With a booming electric guitar kicking off the song, it is clear that Taylor wasn't just a country sweetheart. Almost acting like a warning for anyone who dare break this blonde's heart, "Theres no time for tears just sittin' here planning my revenge". And what a revenge does she plan. Dating best friends? Check. Good ole Scott Swift armed with a shotgun? Check. Telling her friends he's gay? Check (before 2008 that is). And of course, setting fire to his memory.
Perhaps there really is time for tears. Doing yet another 180, we find Taylor in a much more vulnerable state. Introduced to Drew, we all have a Drew. That boy who sits next to us in class. Charming, beautiful, sweet, funny, and, oh yeah, taken. Taylor's bitter longing is shown in every second of this song, from the quiet guitar strums to the climax, describing him as the "Only one whose got enough of her to break her heart". We've all cried on our instrument of choice. For Taylor, it was Teardrops on My Guitar.
"I don't know what I want, so don't ask me" A quote that could of been from just about any teenager or young adult in the world, but its of course from Ms. Swift. Taylor describes yet another emotion in which millions of people can relate to (shocker). Feeling a bit lost, alone on your journey. Everybody is looking for A Place in this World, and we're lucky that Taylor found hers on our radios.
The bitter moment of realization is where we find our girl in the next track. After being blamed, ridiculed and shunned by someone she loved, Swift finally puts her foot down. "Now that I'm sitting here thinking it through, I've never been anywhere Cold as You". One of the best in Taylor's discography, from the opening piano, the quiet verses, the powerful chorus, and the amazing climax, we feel the frustration, the emotion, and eventually the new found strength. It is truly "time to let go".
Lonely, outcasted, shunned, confused, and trapped. Thats the situation Taylor finds herself in The Outside. How can I ever try to be better if nobody ever lets me in?, she begs. Such a common feeling for nearly any kid at some point in their school career. The lunch table you don't sit at, the people you want to talk to but you don't, the parties you don't get invited to, the circles you're left out of can leave you lonely and confused. Did you do something wrong? Do they dislike you? Should you talk to them? Should you just forget it? Taylor reminds us that we are not alone on the outside looking in.
The idea of acceptance crosses over into the next track. Here we find a girl desperately searching for acceptance for her looks, for herself. Its sad to see that she never feels as though she has it, even when she does. The only one who doesn't see her beauty is the face in the mirror. Taylor watches this girl's desperate struggle, all while being Tied Together With a Smile, but it becomes clear to Taylor that she is coming undone.
Crushes, we all have had them. That boy (or girl) that just seems so perfect and sweet and, well, beautiful. We aren't sad we don't have them, we aren't even asking them to love us, we just want them to know how beautiful they truly are. Thats where Taylor's diary of an album takes us next. Cory, he has eyes like a jungle, a smile like the radio, and pictures in Taylor's mind to be saved for a rainy day. Taylor openly hopes "his life leads him back to her door" but Swift is content if it doesn't so long as he will Stay Beautiful.
Sam Sam Sam. Look what you've done. Taylor explores old memories of flowers, songs, and smiles as being tarnished by one simple word, "yes". In emotions somewhat similar to those seen on Picture to Burn, but instead of Taylor love turning to hate, we see love turn to bitter disappointment. He should've known better. He shouldn't of done what he did. He should've been honest. He just Should've Said No.
Sometimes love is really forever. This hope, obviously an important one to Swift, is illustrated before our eyes with the help of Mary. From being 7 and 9 in the backyard, to being 16 years old riding in trucks at 2am, to walking down the aisle, to being 87 and 89 and still looking at eachother "like the stars that shine", After burnt pictures, teardrops on guitars and very cold guys, we see that, yeah, sometimes love is forever, Oh My My My!
"Play it again" Taylor asks us, while describing her and Drew's song. You see, Taylor and Drew didn't have an " Our Song" like other couples. No sappy love song that they once danced to, nor a slow song that played when they first kissed, no, these guy's "song is much more than that. From slamming screen doors, tapping on windows, and the way she laughs, Taylor and Drew's song is much deeper than something played on the radio.
I'm Only Me When Im with You describes Taylor and Abigail, perhaps the most stable relationship she's ever had. Taylor sings of the way she feels when shes around good ole Abby Anderson. Shes only up when shes not down, drives her crazy, and yes, shes only herself, when shes with her.
"We could be a beautiful, miracle, unbelievable, instead of just Invisible" This song shows the maturity Taylor possessed even at the ripe ole age of 11. Like Drew whom she'd meet a few years later, this boy also had his eyes on another girl. A common theme for Taylor seems to be that someone isn't noticing her, whether its Drew, the people on the inside, or this boy, luckily, I think they've noticed her now.
We don't talk about this one
I'd lie, pretty rare, as it was only released the first week of album release at Best buy, but still one to have. We return to that oblivious boy. "Doesn't he know that I've had him memorized for so long?" Taylor describes this guy that she has invested so much time into, from his favorite color, his eyes, his love of arguing, his beautiful sister, and his guitar playing abilities. "First thought when I wake up, is my God he's beautiful" So Taylor puts on her makeup and prays for a miracle. But if you asked her if she loved him she simply says "I'd Lie"

Some Swifties were having meltdowns because they didn't want her to fall ill like she did last time.
