I have a couple of ideas based on band class and performances:
1) The mic was off: It's very possible that the mic was way too low for him and therefore when he tried to adjust himself the sound was completely lost
b) He is a has-been: He hasn't performed on a TV show with such a high audience in a long time
c) He's just bad.
