What's up with people? The era is doin amazing! Two #1 singles, a #1 album, two additional top 20 hits. Some stans in this site would kill for their fav to have this kind of success! I expect LL to be another top 10 hit and whatever else Captial and Katy decide to release will be atleast top 20 which is still very good. This era should end with success between OOTB and TD which is still an amazing feat.

Not trying to create drama and yes, Katy is doing fine, but I still think the era could have been better handled.
Bad music videos (except for Unconditionally), obvious bad single choices and boring outfits.. Just my opinion though
- how is Birthday doing on radio? Is it still getting positive radio updates?

Katy needs to stop releasing singles so early.
Unconditionally flopped because it was released while Roar was still a huge hit,
Birthday flopped because it was released while Dark Horse was still a huge hit,
Next single will flop because it is released while Birthday Dark Horse is still a huge hit.
Honsetly..
Unconditionally should have came out in December,
Dark Horse in March,
and Birthday in July, summer smash.

Unconditionally seemed like a good 2nd single choice bc it sort of showed something different from katy and it was winter time so a ballady song made sense. and then Dark Horse started picking up steam and completely derailed it. Birthday seemed like a great choice and an obvious smash imo but i guess a combination of the video not getting the attention they were aiming for and the lack of promo sort of tanked it.
This Is How We Do with a great video could be a really obvious summer smash.

I don't buy the lack of promo excuse because it isn't true. The song did get plenty of promo.
But the video did kill the song. It should have been something completely different.

Lets not beat around the bush here, Unconditionally was a terrible single choice. If it was ever meant to be a smash it would've destroyed Dark Horse easily considering the airplay gap between the two before Capitol jumped ship. Wasn't it getting terrible call out scores too? I did a quick Google but I can't find mention of it now. If that wasn't already a single and Katy didn't reveal that it was her favourite track no one would be suggesting it be released. It's not catchy, it's not relatable and it's difficult to sing along to. "Uncle DeSean Ali" "Hong Kong Dish On Ali" etc.
Birthday was harmed massively by bad timing of the video release and a bad video, but really we can't deny it, if the song was going to smash it would've done so regardless. The vast majority of Katy's singles peak prior to the release of their video. (From the top of my head; CG, TD, FW, ET, POM, Roar and DH were all #1 prior to video release day)
Lets stop making excuses and just agree that the public weren't here for those songs.

I think the video harmed Birthday a bit though. Maybe it wouldn't be #1, but Top 10 at least.

This tbh. Acceptance is they key to be truly free, as said in Uncle DeSean Ali

Same, except have "Unconditonally" in late-December (with a better video). And since "Uncle" would've been another top 10 (and therefore a success), they would've gone with Katy's original plans to release "Birthday" in February. And then, after it's slayage, "Dark Horse" would've became the hit of Summer 2014.
Then "This Is How We Do" could've became the back-to-school tween mall pop anthem for a bit. "Double Rainbow" for the Winter, and then "Legendary Lovers" to slay the Spring.
