Backbeat: Marina & The Diamonds Previews Tracks From Upcoming Album 'Electra Heart'
From Billboard.biz
Atlantic Records singer/songwriter Marina Diamandis, a.k.a. Marina & The Diamonds, popped by the Billboard offices on Tuesday to play a handful of songs from her hotly anticipated sophomore album, Electra Heart, due out April 30 in the U.K. and tentatively slated for a July release here in the States.
The album includes two songs from superstar producer Dr. Luke ( Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Britney Spears‘ Femme Fatale) including first single “Prima Donna,” an uptempo dance jam whose video Marina just premiered last week on her Vevo channel.
Another track, “Lies,” rides a dubstep-esque groove akin to Dr. Luke’s recent work on Rihanna’s current single “You Da One.” Other producers on the album include Rick Nowels (Lykke Li’s Youth Novels, Colbie Caillat’s Breakthrough) and Greg Kurstin ( The Shins‘ Port of Morrow, Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger). Another recent release, the Stargate-produced “Radioactive,” was not included on the 12-song tracklist Diamandis shared with Idolator last week, but manager Derek MacKillop of Wallace Productions/Rocket Music says it may still materialize on a deluxe version.
Diamandis described Electra Heart as alternately darker and more straight-up pop than her critically praised debut, The Family Jewels. Although the album was not a runaway success in the States and failed to launch a hit single, it still scored her an opening slot for Katy Perry on her California Dreams tour. Although she relished the experience, “it was a bit weird playing for six to nine year olds,” Diamandis said.
Next, Marina & The Diamonds hits the road with Coldplay for a few select dates this summer, after which she will embark on her own headlining U.S. club tour. In the meantime, stay tuned to her Vevo channel for more chapters in her ongoing video series - the “Prima Donna” clip is just part 4 in a 12-part saga
