Exactly. I didn't even give Chasing Pavements a 10, its nowhere near Adeles best.

Hometown Glory: 19

The UK agrees with me.
Edit: And the Grammys
"Chasing Pavements" won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Grammy Award for Song of the Year.

Well, SLY and RITD are universally liked, too. If you go back to old posts, many people here wanted SFTTR as a single, so yes, I think it would have easily made the top 30 on this rate. I'm shocked that it's not higher, though.

Duffy - Mercy

Highest Score: 10 (15x)
Lowest Score: 5.5 (1x)
UK Chart Peak: #1
US Chart Peak: #27
Mercy, the second and lead single from Duffy's debut Rockferry, remains her biggest single; it peaked at number one in eight countries, including the United Kingdom. It was written by Duffy and Steve Booker, and was one of the last songs written for the album. Duffy felt that the sound had been missing something big, and attempted to apply a sheeny, shiny, sexy girl-group gloss to later single Stepping Stone, until this song was written. Duffy and Booker were introduced by Booker's girlfriend; Duffy was renting Booker's apartment at the time.

Duffy already had lyrics for the song written, but it wasn't until the two worked together that a clearer sound came into frame.

I just love organic sound. I love strings. I love the way chords can be cleverly arranged. The '60s was the best era in music and it's a real honor for me to think that it nods to that but it was never an intention. I also love the '70s, the '90s and so on. I remember when I was a child we used to listen to (DJ) Steve Wright on Radio 2 when he'd play that real heartbreaky music. We were just hooked. A bit of drama on the weekends.

Upon release, Mercy drew comparisons to songs as diverse as Aretha Franklin's "Chain of Fools" and Amy Winehouse's "Rehab." (I can definitely hear both.) Duffy was nominated at the Brits for Best British Single, but lost to superior single (and bigger hit) The Promise by Girls Aloud. Duffy was also nominated for Best Pop Female Vocal Performance for Mercy, but lost to Adele's Chasing Pavements. (Hmm.)
Fun Fact: One Republic recorded a cover version of this song and tacked it on the second album as a bonus track, in hopes of gaining more sales. They also have an original song called Mercy. Brilliant move.

Well that's because 21 is still in its glory days, so I don't think this song will age as good as the first 2 singles.
Yay Lily in the top 10!

That marks Duffy's end in this rate. How about a round of applause?
A standing ovation?
Bueller?

Ooh. Wouldn't that be FANTASTIC?
Here's my little secret: I was the low score for the past three songs. I've always had problems with some of LiaLG's lyrics, SfttR's overall production, and ... Mercy's a mess. A catchy mess, but a mess nonetheless. Let's be honest here.
But it's kind of funny. Two songs in 2008 were sent out to do the business, and pick up where Amy left off. One got all the glory and attention at the start, but the other was the slow burner. So, it's beautiful how this rate turned out. The tortoise always wins the race!

Adele - Chasing Pavements
Average Rate: 8.609
Highest Score: 10 (12x)
Lowest Score: 6 (1x)
UK Chart Peak: #2
US Chart Peak: #21
Chasing Pavements, the second and lead single from Adele's debut album 19, was initially released in early January 2008 after a late December 2007 performance on Friday Night with Johnathon Ross. It peaked at number seven on the Irish charts, and at number two on the UK charts. It would later go top ten in Denmark, Italy and Norway.
Adele wrote the final song with EG White, but composed most of it on her own. There have been many rumors about the song's real meaning - a prevalent one that "chasing pavements" was code for chasing gay men (a reference to teenage Adele's attraction to the lavender kind) supposedly kept it off American Top 40 radio - but in 2011, Adele came clean to RealRadio and revealed all. She admitted that the lyrics were born from frustration after catching her then boyfriend cheating on her at a bar/club. After punching him and storming out, she related her hopeless situation to chasing pavements, something that made no sense and was ultimately fruitless. She sang some lyrics into her cell phone, and composed the song when she got home.
Chasing Pavements was a slow burner in the United States, and didn't really take off until her Saturday Night Live performance on October 18th, 2008. Adele gave spirited renditions of it and Cold Shoulder, but happened to catch herself on the highest rated episode of SNL's season (featuring Sarah Palin FINALLY meeting Tina Fey's impersonation of her). The result? Four unexpected Grammy nominations - Best New Artist, and Song, Record and Pop Female Vocal Performance for Chasing Pavements. She won New Artist and Pop Female, beating acquaintance Duffy in both categories. The song, due to her award and performance of it, peaked at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100.

At some moments, I think Chasing Pavements is the best thing Adele's ever done. It's just perfect. The opening lines (I made up my mind/no need to think it over/If I'm wrong or I'm right/no need to look further/this ain't lust/I know, this is love) send chills up my spine every time I hear them.
One more for the night! We all know it's Florence, as I said each of the ladies would be showing up. But which Flo song?
