For Radio Airplay, 1 Hot 100 point for every 1 million impression. (Example: 36 Million Audience Impressions = 36 Hot 100 Points)
For sales, 1 Hot 100 point for every 1,000 sold. (Example: 24,000 sold = 24 Hot 100 Points)
For streaming, 1 Hot 100 point for every 10,000 streams. (Example: 500,000 streams = 50 Hot 100 points)
Once you have the Hot 100 points for each, then you have to weigh them. Airplay has the highest percentage, which is 55%. Next would be sales at 35%. Finally, streaming has the remaining 10%.
So, using the examples from above the formula would read as follows-
(36 x .55) + (24 x .35) + (50 x .10)
or
(19.8) + (8.4) + (5.0) = 33.2 Total Hot 100 Points
Using the most recent Hot 100 (published August 2, 2012):
#1. Carly Rae Jepsen "Call Me Maybe"
179,000 in Sales = 62.65
915,000 in Streaming = 9.15
109 Million in Audience Impressions = 59.95
Grand Total of 131.75 in Hot 100 Points
#2. Katy Perry "Wide Awake"
151,000 in Sales = 52.85
580,000 in Streaming = 5.80
117 Million in Audience Impressions = 64.35
Grand Total of 123.00 in Hot 100 Points
#3. Maroon 5 "Payphone"
119,000 in Sales = 41.65
763,000 in Streaming = 7.63
128 Million in Audience Impressions = 70.40
Grand Total of 119.68 in Hot 100 Points
#4. Flo Rida "Whistle"
237,000 in Sales = 82.95
614,000 in Streaming = 6.14
53 Million in Audience Impressions = 29.15
Grand Total of 118.24 in Hot 100 Points
#5. Ellie Goulding "Lights"
122,000 in Sales = 42.70
848,000 in Streaming = 8.48
109 Million in Audience Impressions = 59.95
Grand Total of 111.13 in Hot 100 Points
Using the Hot 100 from the week prior (published July 26, 2012):
#1. Carly Rae Jepsen "Call Me Maybe"
164,000 in Sales = 57.40
819,000 in Streaming = 8.19
117 Million in Audience Impressions = 64.35
Grand Total of 129.94 in Hot 100 Points
#2. Maroon 5 "Payphone"
131,000 in Sales = 45.85
811,000 in Streaming = 8.11
134 Million in Audience Impressions = 73.70
Grand Total of 127.66 in Hot 100 Points
#3. Katy Perry "Wide Awake"
170,000 in Sales = 59.50
653,000 in Streaming = 6.53
111 Million in Audience Impressions = 61.05
Grand Total of 127.08 in Hot 100 Points
#4. Ellie Goulding "Lights"
134,000 in Sales = 46.90
867,000 in Streaming = 8.67
99 Million in Audience Impressions = 54.45
Grand Total of 110.02 in Hot 100 Points
(#5 this week was Gotye "Somebody That I Used To Know" & stats were not given of the song.)
#6. Flo Rida "Whistle"
210,000 in Sales = 73.50
584,000 in Streaming = 5.84
44 Million in Audience Impressions = 24.20
Grand Total of 103.54 in Hot 100 Points
This should give everyone a MUCH clearer understanding of the Hot 100 and how it works. As you can see, Katy Perry "Wide Awake" moved up to #2 in the most recent week but it was really her prior week (when she was at #3) that she was closest to Carly Rae Jepsen "Call Me Maybe".
I read that ^ somewhere but i forgot
