Here's much worse news for Perry: "Birthday" drops from its #17 peak to date to #22 in its ninth week. Unless it does a quick reversal, it will go down as her lowest-charting single (from one of her albums) since "Thinking Of You" peaked at #29 in February 2009. What's the problem with "Birthday"? I think it's a good record, if perhaps too much a summary of her hit formula. Or maybe Perry is simply entering the next phase of her career where not every single will be an automatic smash and her fortunes will rise or fall on the merits of each release. It happens to everybody eventually.
A reach. Everyone underperforms, Katy already experienced it with Unconditonally and Thinkin' Of You (even though they eventually went platinum).
I just find it weird how Birthday has barely passed 400k downloads with 85M+ and still gaining airplay exposure, a BBMA performance and superior dance remix
Tbh music is becoming very male-oriented again, "Birthday" is just too gay-sounding to get the attention of male audiences. I have friends who looooved "Dark Horse" and "Roar", but as soon as this comes on they change it, same with "Unconditionally".
