I've just learned that HIStory might actually be UNDERcertified.
While SoundScan doesn't include music club figures when compiling data, the RIAA
does when it comes to certifications. HIStory sold 2.6 million copies per SoundScan. But I've just learned that 730,000 were shipped to consumers via the BMG Music Club, and more than 1 million went out through Columbia House. That puts it at about 4.3 million copies in the United States, at least enough for an eight-times platinum certification, possibly even nine-times platinum.
I don't think all of the RIAA's practices are entirely on the up-and-up, but the stan in me wouldn't mind seeing the numbers for such a great album inch up a little higher.
