04. David Cook “Light On"
Album: David Cook
Genre: Pop/Rock
Producer: Rob Cavallo
US Billboard Hot 100: #17
As you all should know by now, David Cook was my favorite contestant from the last season of American Idol, right after his first performance in the show, I knew he had potential to deliver great music. I was very curious to see what he had in store after Idol, and it’s very obvious that I wasn’t disappointed at all.
Light On definitely shows that he isn’t the typical Idol winner, even though his massive fan base already ranked him up with Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, he is absolutely different from the other winners.
Light On could interpreted in many different ways, but basically it’s a goodbye song to someone, family or love relationship. Cook’s vocals have never been more perfect and his passion and emotion give the song a more personal meaning. The chorus is very memorable with lyrics such as
“Try to leave a light on when I’m gone, even in the daylight, shine on.” This song is everything I was expecting from him, his future looks bright and I’m sure he will only get better from here.
Light On is without a doubt, one of my favorite songs this year. Hands down.
03. Katy Perry “I Kissed A Girl”
Album: One Of The Boys
Genre: Pop
Producer: Dr. Luke
US Billboard Hot 100: #1
You know a list is not complete, if you don’t have the summer anthem in there somewhere. When I first heard it, I liked it, but not that much, after a few weeks I found myself completely obsessed with it and couldn’t stop playing it. Katy Perry’s sassy voice is simply irresistible singing controversial lyrics about her lesbian curiosity as she admits her love for cherry chapstic, soft skin, and kissable red lips. The chorus is an anthem and it’s so catchy,
“I kissed a girl…and I liked it” was heard everywhere around the world. The clever lyrics definitely showcase Perry’s songwriting talents, the song tells a story from beginning to end, I’m not gonna post lyrics this time because I’m sure you all know them very well. The music video could’ve been better, but at least it was a decent visual for the story.
I Kissed A Girl was the perfect summer anthem and breakthrough song; I’m sure this is not the last hit we will hear from Katy Perry. Truly one of the best songs of the year, no doubt about it.
The last two songs will be revealed tomorrow! You all should know the top two songs by now so start speculating, I have not decided the order yet.
