There's so much going on in "Retrograde" sonically and vocally. This is a dazzling tough-love space-blues track, with a scat-hummed melody, looped with muted piano chords, measured hand claps and the build up with that hard-hitting synth. James got soul! Such an interesting track that somehow feels so short, you want it to last longer.
"Retrograde" is by far the most critically acclaimed tracks in this rate, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise if it won. But its top 3 entry wasn't so predictable as people think, it wasn't doing so well throughout some updates.
Rhye
"Open"
I don't fault you guys for getting through the entire rate and having to find out during their first update that Rhye is cis-male. Not even blogs/critics knew who was behind Rhye – for the internet promises it was “a somebody”, and that somebody has a voice much like Sade’s – but there’s no doubt that ‘Open’ is beautiful song. "Open" is deeply intimate, soothing yet sensual, gentle vocals and easy to get lost in. Overall, the boys have had a great run with just only three representing tracks and two almost making top 20. We've been quiet about our feelings towards "Open", could potentially pull a dark horse?
Tinashe
"2 On"
featuring SchoolBoy Q
Two months ago before this rate even started, "2 On" was in the same boat with the rest of them. Meaning "2 on" wasn't a chart topper or the soon to be top 20 that it is now. Wow, look at my rate its power! Tinashe's vocals are so smooth, she's joined by the club-friendly producer DJ Mustard and has a dope guest verse from TDE's Schoolboy Q - it's a formula for urban to pop crossover.
The first single for Tinashe's upcoming debut album is certainly the least interesting, least innovative and least "new wave" track of hers and even in the entire rate... It would almost be a joke if she takes the crown for this particular rate but you cannot deny that it's a bop.
