After what I said yesterday.
Millions Reasons is actually a pretty good ballad for Gaga's standards (and no, Edge of Glory doesn't count), she's not shouting, the song isn't overproduced, she truly is doing what she wants
The confession
No baby. Gaga is talking about heavy drugs. You cannot line a cig with weed. The term "to line" is in direct reference with stronger drugs I win A-Yo cancelled from EVER becoming a single plz and thanks talent ONLY
I honestly think Perfect Illusion has/had the potential to be as big as Bad Romance. It's a HUGE song. Too bad radio and GP can't get their **** together
If anything is going to break out from this album, it's going to be on the whim of the casual listeners unfortunately. It's most likely going to be a slow burner that catches on, but chances of that actually happening are slim. Who knows though, Million Reasons seems to be a good start.
Unsure if anyone has tried this but if you happen to own an Amazon Echo, you can prompt "Alexa" to play 30 second snippets from the album. I tried it at my work this morning by nonchalantly telling Alexa to play "Joanne by Lady Gaga" assuming it'd just play me Perfect Illusion. I wasn't able to get on my laptop until just now so I assumed that snippets had already been out to the public... but the only songs I previewed were Joanne, Grigio Girls, A-yo, Sinner's Prayer, and Hey Girl.
Yeah I agree that if perfect illusion caught on and the promo was big first / second week and radio supported it longer that it had huuuuge potential to be a bad romance sized smash
But I really think you need to listen to other songs on the album to appreciate perfect illusion
I kinda wish she put more thought and effort into the video though tbh. It's a good video, but thinking back, who knows where Bad Romance (and essentially Gaga's career) would've been without the video. It was on the verge of flopping before the video came out and people were in awe by it. Same could have happened with PI with a better concept.
On the other hand, the times are just different now. High concept videos don't seem to catch on anymore, but rather the songs themselves are hits and the videos are highly viewed because of it. So Gaga is kinda ****ed in that regard - probably part of the reason she decided to give up visuals this era, people just don't care about that anymore.
