Lauryn Hill sang and rapped about her personal troubles, as well as political and societal issues, and was always serious in tone and manner (even her more relaxed songs aren't what you'd call "fun"), as her music was an extension of her personality, which is bleak.
Nicki Minaj sings and raps about stuff that is overall less serious thematically, and are often complete works of fiction. Even excluding her pop and R&B songs (which have a lot of pre-written lyrics), tracks like Roman Holiday or Beez in the Trap aren't reflective of reality. They're not autobiographical.
